Radar Detectors

Just wondering if a cop pulls you over even with a detector in California what will happen to you?

Do they really help?

Thanks,
Trav

If you get pulled over with a radar detector, you didn't spend enough on it. 😉

amen. stop being a cheapskate and get a v1/x50!!

that sh|t works, i dont care what everyone else says.

it's a waste of money.
I've been driving for like 9 years now. Haven't been pulled over once..... well once at a sh!tty neighborhood. But the cop thought I was going there for drugs or something.

they are if you tune yourself into it. my drive to work i know everyspot where where mine picks up the X band so i dont worry about that. the cops around here use instant on radar guns, so the second i hear the K band beep, my foot is on the break. you have about 5 second before the radar gets a lock on you.

If you get pulled over for a slightest speeding.
You'll definitely get a ticket if a cop sees a radar detector.

There's no such thing as the RADAR getting a "lock on you.' It either registered your speed or it didn't. Trust me, I'm trained to run RADAR and the only time a RADAR detector will help you is if there are many other cars and the officer is clocking them all. If implemented properly, a good officer will visually guage your speed and turn on his/her RADAR only when they are fairly certain you're speeding. Truth be told, many officers simply turn it on and leave it on as a deterrent to those with detectors and as a lazy way to pass the time. Less clicking and guess work just leaving it turned on constantly.

EDIT: I should clarify the "lock on you" thing. Locking the speed is the act of the officer pushing a button and "locking" the displayed speed at the time the button was pressed. I don't know how other states are, but in Kansas it is the highest observed speed on the display, regardless of what was "locked in.' In other words, I may be sitting there, not paying attention and listening only to the tone of the RADAR unit and may hear you fly by. When I glance at the display, I may see 89 mph on the readout but may not hit the button until you've slowed down to say, 86 mph. In Kansas, I can still write you a citation for 89 mph because that was the highest observed speed.

i have an X50 and drive in philly, i think mine is broken, it has NEVER went off on a cop that i had seen in sight.

What is the offense though? Trying to evade a ticket?

Ticket is speeding.
Having one shows that you want to speed and get away with it.

No I mean what is the offense called.

In PA you get 2 tickets. 1 for speeding, 1 for raddar detector.
In ohio + WV you can get pulled over for having a radar detector and get a ticket even if you are not speeding. They actually make a radar detector detector which they use to see if you are using one. Of course I am told the way to defeat them is to drive with a new 75 watt lightbulb laying on your dashboard, it messes up the radar detector detector. Of course then the guy told me he even got a ticket for doing the lightbulb thing.

yes i know about the highes speed displayed when you pull the trigger. Im talking about when im trucking along and all of a sudden my detector starts to beep on the K or KA band. Its a weak signal so only one bar is showing. thats when i hit the breaks because i know about 1/2 a mile up the road a cop just turned on his radar gun. say what you will but driving through the panhandle of Texas the DPS units are radar happy mofos and i have never reveived a ticket.

hehe the only ticket i have received was in Kansas and i didnt have my detector.

Okay but what's the fine for having one? If you hide it when they pull you over can they still write you up for it?

that's not really true, some cops just cruise around at the speed limit and if you're not paying attention and drive past them, they will still pull you over regardless of if they're using radar or not.

radar detectors are useful but no replacement for alert driving if you insist on speeding.

No I mean what is the offense called.

He means you have 0 chance of getting a warning if you have a radar detector.

No radar detector can detect radar that isn't on, so if the cop uses instant-on radar you're screwed regardless.

In CA it is legal to have a radar detector. Like already mentioned though, you won't get a break if he sees you with one.

I'm temped to say "neg" on the instant-on comment you made. I've come by a few cops and none of them have pulled me over just for having the detector.

Just saying, but I'm sure it's a liability.

Well yeah the detector can detect it, but if he had it pointed at you he already has your speed when your detector detects it. If he had it on someone else, you're alright.
