You wouldn't be getting any speeding tickets anyway. It's an Xterra!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. ;)

All the tickets I've gotten were with a radar detector. It's been about 8 years that I haven't used one and been ticket free the whole time.

I have a Valentine One Radar and its sweet. No problems ever and it has definitely saved me more than I can count. All of my friends have the same ones. No problems ever heard. My bro just got the new X50 from passport. It's brand new and seems to work fine but his one day just crapped out and they had to send a new one. So sounds like all the knacks aren't worked out yet.
Valentine is 400 bucks plus tax and Passport X50 is 300.
Plus I am not sure about passport, but valentine allows you to upgrade whenever you want to. Indefinite time.

I've heard that most cops are pretty adamant that if they see your detector in the window, they'll pull you over and ticket you even if you're speeding below their normal threshold, i.e., they'll stop you if you're doing 65 in a 55, when they might otherwise ignore you unless you're going over 70.

Also if they happen to pull you over without seeing a detector first, thinking about letting you go with a warning, they'll change their minds about that warning in half a heartbeat if they notice your anti-enforcement device.

I have the model like yours but without the voice sh*t. It works really well, the only thing you need to worry about are the "instant On" radar guns the cops use. I get hit by those 2-3 times a week and when i hear the KA band beep with one bar i slow down.

Also i almost got nailed in my town the other day. our roads are dirt through the residential areas and the town put up speed limit signs of 15 mph for dust control. Annoying as hell to go down this road 15mph UGGG. well a few weeks later i just left my house and im going to work and my X band is beeping, nothing unusual false alarms all the time on that band. well all of a sudden it gets stronger which was odd so i slow down from 24 to 20 and sure enough i see the front end of a county sheriff cruiser poking out from bushes. now i hit the breaks and get it down to 15 before he locks me in.
Until then i have never seen a cop use the X band, but now when it goes off it makes me jump.

another is Laser. If you get tagged by a laser sure your radar will go off but its too late, your speed is already locked on his gun. The only way to defeat laser is to pick it up when the cop nails the car infront of you and you pick up the signal.

and them get ahead of me and i just follow behind :)

I have to agree about Lasers...it's always been my experience that that's the one thing detectors can't do too much for. Personally, i think that too many people look at radar detectors as a license to speed freely, and they'll let the detector tell them when they need to slow down...i tend to agree with what Vic said--i use the radar with common sense, and i haven't gotten a ticket since i bought one, whereas there's been several places that i would have gotten ticketed if it wasn't in my car.

It also helps that i live in a state where it's not required for us to have front license plates, which gives them less to shoot for.

i hate v1 radar detectors. overpriced POS (well it would be great if it were significantly cheaper).

i recommend the escort 8500 x50 (get the one with the red lights - the blue lights are a waste (no added functionality - only there for aesthetic reasons)..

i also think Bel is coming out with some new radar detector, although i dont know much about it....

edited: a radar detector is not going to save you when your going significantly above the speed limit (i.e. much higher than 10mph over)....

My CB has saved me far more than my radar detector. I know about cops 5-6 miles in advance, regardless of whether their radar is on or not. :)
