OK, I got in the deal for the PNI RX 5000 Radar Laser Detector with Digital Compass LCD in the Hot Deals forum and hopefully I will get it in a week or two. I haven't made up my mind to just resell it to a friend or use it, but anyways....

What I wanted to know is if there is a "prime" spot to put the radar detector? My grandfather has one and it is on the windshield all the way on the front in the middle... and my friend says to put it on the fold down mirror area on the passenger side.

What's your thoughts? What's the best place that will detect well and maybe not catch the cop's eyes?

the cop's gonna see it regardless if it's above your head in your visor or suction-cupped to your windshield, but placement wise, the windshield seems to yield the best response. How much did you end up getting the fuzz buster for?

i wonder how much more likely a cop is to give you a ticket if he sees that you have one

What's a V1? I've never really looked into radar detectors until I saw the Hot Deal and said... why not. :)

valentine one. One of the most respected radar detectors next to the escort passport 8500. The passport supposedly cheated on reviews @ radarguys.com (or some site like that), or so claims the valentine guy. The v-1 (valentine one) is about $400, but proven to be one of the most valuable investments.

I've got my Cobra (ok, I'm saving up for a V1!) at the bottom center of my windshield. I don't like the power cord hanging in the middle of the 'cockpit', so I didn't put it in front of the rearview mirror or along the top. If I see a cop swing around to pull me over, I just rip the detector off the windshield and throw it under my seat. No it's not illegal, but it doesn't help your case any if The Man sees your pro-evading hardware.

So you get pulled over a lot with your Cobra? What's the point of having it?

I have a cobra. its int he very top corner of the windshield, with my own wiring up to it(stealth). You cannot see it through the tinted top edge of the windshield, and if you roll my window downa nd look in, it is high enough that you cant see it.

My cousin has a V1, and we put themside by side on the middle of my windshield and they worked EXACTLY the same, cept the v1 has direction..

LOL, because the hi-po units around here started wising up overnight about not leaving their radar on 24x7 when driving down the interstate (easily detectable). Now they just spring on you from over hills and instant-on your butt leaving you helpless. Not even a V1 will save you from that. Had that happen to me twice before adjusting my driving habits to counteract The Man. :D It's saved me 9.5 times out of 10, so still worth it by far!For everytime I get pulled over, I've been saved at least 10x.

I'm almost not surprised- mine works great after 3 years now and has satisfactory enough range that I can slow down in time. The V1 probably has range, but on an Interstate, you can pretty much guess what direction he's coming from without needing arrows... but I still want a V1. ;)

the cobra i have is old enough that it isnt limited to channels. It detects a HUGE range of everying x, k, ka, and anything else that would come out. plus, the 360 laser works awesome, the way i have it angled, it aims right out my back window fine.

Hey same here! I got mine in 1999. It's the ESD-6200. I still recommend them, and they can still be found on eBay (where I got mine) for $40. Works wonders.

Keep in mind that smart driving, having cover, and knowing your enemy plays a far greater role that hardware alone. For example, if you are alone on the highway it doesnt matter what you've got...the only help in this case is if you picked up someone else getting zapped further up ahead...so you have advanced warning.

From an investment perspective, 2 tickets equals 1 V1....if you speed excessively, it will pay for itself in 1 ticket. I was actually gonna get the PNI one for the digital compass....but a bad radar detector is worse than no radar detector because it gives you a false sense of confidence.

True. I will admit I am an extreemly smart speeder.

Things such as going around curves in the right lane, going over hills behind someone, slowing down by freeway entrance ramps, going under bridges behind someone in right lane, etc.

Its all about playing it smart.

Some of my friends who dont have a detector always say "you lead on the freeway, you have the radar"

and I am like, "no, that just saves you guys, all I get is to hear a beep that lets me know i need to get my license and proof of insurance out. If you want to speed, follow me exactly and you wont get a ticket"
