radar detector question in here...

spanky

Lifer
does anyone know how it works? i was told that a radar detector will go off if and when a cop zapped u with his radar. if this is true... and if u were speeding... wouldn't it already be too late? is this explaination of how a radar detector functions correct?

if the cop is using x,k or super k band and the rader is on then you radar will pick it up little bit before he picks u up.Now if its laser then your radar will not go off untill he zaps u or a car inforint of u which will give u a chances to slow down. Now also they are comming out with instant on. Which untill he presses the buttom its not on and as soon its on he got u

yeh, he's right. i have an old one, and it used to work great, it saved me about 4 or 5 times

nowadays tho, cops use laser, which u can't stop

so save ur money, and slow down 😛

it almost seems pointless to have a radar detector, no? 😱

You have to have a good radar detector, and you have to know how to effectively interpret the information it gives you. But it won't save you from anything if you're stupid. The only real way to prevent speeding tickets is just not to speed.

unless u are willing to speend 400 on radar detector its pretty pointless then again i think now even the $400 getting to the point that if cops want to get u they will.

yes true about slowing down. reason i asked is becuz a friend of mine got her second speeding ticket in a month last week. funny thing is... i think she got it in the same spot :Q so she was telling me that she wanted to get a radar detector and blah blah blah... ebay... blah blah blah.... $200... blah blah blah....

$200?!?!?!?!?!

a co-worker of mine bought a radar detector last year for like $80, so when i heard the $200 price tag... i was thinking "rape!" 😛 i think the radar detector she was looking at was also a jammer. i remember a friend of mine, back in the day when i was valet parking, had a jammer and sorta told me what it does and crap. so today, i asked another bud of mine about radar detectors and jammers and that basically led me to this thread. and about the jammer... my bud brought up an interesting point. if an experienced cop zaps me... and gets a garbled signal back... he's probably thinking "well even though u might not be speeding... i'm gonna pull u over anyway". so yeah... i guess i am gonna tell this chick to save her loot and reiterate "slow the fsck down" 🙂

Instant on has been out for a while. Laser is not used as much as you think because it is much harder to focus and obtain an accurate reading.

Passive Jammers(the only ones you hear advertised, as active jammers are bulky, expensive, and illegal) do not work worth a damn if at all.

There are also some "jammers" out there that acutally bounce the signal back in a stronger wave length and totaly hoses the cops radar gun. not only are they illegal but i guarantee you if that happens to a cop you will get pulled over.

I bought a cheap Whistler from BB two years ago, and let me tell you, it has saved me a few times. I almost never speed (over a set point) on long trips; however, on long, straight highways, where a cop might be a few miles ahead of you, tagging people, it helps. It also can only really save you if you weren't speeding too much in the first place, from what I've found.

never heard of bouncing back a signal at 2x strength before. got one particular in mind?

If you have a high end radar detector, and know how to interpret the readings, you can get saved many times. I always buy the high end Bel-Tronics models as they always rate the highest in sesitivity. I have picked up a cops radar over 2 miles away with mine. It was a straight stretch of road, and in a rural area, but I was in awe as I slowed down and passed the cop almost 5 minutes later. It also depends on where you live. Up here in NH they do not use laser at all, and have primarily ony used the older K band radar. They just started outfitting some of the state police up here with the KA band now. I have been saved many many times from getting a ticket with mine. 🙂

If you plan to buy a cheaper one, don't waste your time. I am so used to mine now that when I get a K reading, my foot goes to the brake pedal in a totally reflexive action, I don't even need to think about it. 🙂

Go read about the instant on between K, Ka, and Laser. That will pretty much tell you don't waste your money.

Except that when instant on radar is in use in a speedtrap in your area, the odds are that it will be used on the cars ahead of you first, and a good detector will pick that up. If you know how to accurately judge the signals of instant on in use, you will have time to slow down. I've done it several times. The cops in this area pretty much all use instant on and don't just drive around or park with it on constantly.
