Save your money... don't speed. If you do... cops hate radar detectors. You have a worse chance of getting a ticket with one stuck up on your windshield than you do without it.

Screw em... Who cares what they think? If it's for a relative, you'll be related to em next year too so you can always get em a new radar detector then if this one sucks ass.

radar detectors are great, i just don't know how a good a cheap one would function

Back in October, there were some great deals in HD on some decent PNI detectors/digital compasses from Buy.com. I got 2 for ~$25 each plus shipping. Compass feature is cool and accurate and (believe it or not), the radar detector works pretty good as well. Very, very few false alarms and saved me from a ticket just a couple of days ago. 😉
Those deals are pretty much gone now. There was some new FCC regulation that required a change in radar detectors before 10/27 and the old models were being dumped.

Only deal currently in HD, looks questionable

$40/$50? Why give someone a false feeling of security; all the detectors in that price range are pure garbage.

Yeah most tests haven't shown detectors in that range to be worth anything on the whole.
