racoons on my roof?! what do I do??

There are 4 racoons on my roof! What do I do? I called animal control and they are closed during the weekend. My mom is freaking out and wants me to do something! I tried scaring them away, but they stay or just come back later. They have been around for 3 days now.. and are only around at night. One of them is bigger, and the 3 are smaller..

Any advice/??

Seriously, you could use a net to catch them with. Else small stones, or a bucket of water might scare them away.

Well... I do have a 12 gauge, but I don't want to shoot anything else out w/ the spread! Maybe I can find my air gun that shot BB's somewhere.. but what are you supposed to do in this situation? Are there traps I am supposed to set up? I heard they keep coming back too..

Wats wrong with racoons, they are cute. Let them be, they are probably hungry. Just leave out some food and milk for them.

Don't know exactly what would be effective, but:

1. Try firing rubber bands at them. If they take exception to that and start chasing you, run inside and stay there till Monday!

2. (less humane) Try aiming for their rumps with a BB gun. If they take exception to that, run inside and stay there till Monday!

3. Read to them from the Old Testament. Maybe they'll get bored and go away.

4. If you have a particularly horrible singing voice, try hitting them with your favorite song. Maybe they'll run screaming from the roof and never come back. If they take exception to that, run inside and stay there till Monday!

I wouldn't care as much, but they are leaving their feces everywhere and tearing up the roof as well. Still can't find my BB gun.. hmm

I was in Detroit Friday morning and was lisrening to the radio. A home owner was bringing a suite agains the previous owner and a Home Inspector. It seems there were raccoons living in the attic of the home. Over ONE TON of feces was removed from the attic!

....call out the Marines!

Btw, I would not shoot them with anything...maybe a water hose, as in most communities it is against the law to shoot even a BB Gun within the city limits.

Raccoons are varmints. Their population has exploded and many carry rabies. It is a type that can infect domestic animals like dogs and cats. Before all the Animal Rights Wackos that have NO IDEA got their hairbrained laws passed, you could just get out the trusty old 22 and your problem would be solved in short order.

Be careful, as a sign of rabies is out of the ordinary behavior.....and that might explain a lot of the happenings around here lately...

The law about BB guns: (Don't want you to get in trouble... )

Firing a BB gun in public or city limits where it is visible and can work its way into public area is against teh law and can be procecutable.

Firing a BB Gun (More politically corect term AirSoft Gun) at animals will cause suffering and stress to teh animal and maybe prosecutable by the law

So the most humain way, and unprosecuatable way, is probably to get a water hose and ladder and litterally HOSE them out... How did they get up there in the first place?

Anyway good luck and hope you don't get into trouble...

I have no idea how they got up there.. probably climbed up through the side. I don't hear them walking around on the roof anymore.. but they will probably be back later.

I don't even want to get near enough to use the water hose.. hopefully they won't come back.

shoot em' with the BB gun!!! just make sure your not going to hit anything else. And, if you are really into it, shoot to kill so that there will be no suffering. If you aren't going to shoot to kill, don't hit them too hard......

bb guns fire steel BBs. Airsoft guns shoot plastic 6mm BBs.

Try pouring ammonia on the roof. The smell may drive them off. It worked for me when I had one knocking over my garbage.

shoot them with a slingshot, a bow and arrow (crossbows are illegal), water hose.

Remember you piss those things off, they'll kick your ASS. Racoons are mean mofo's they'll kill your dogs/cats in no time flat.

If they're on the roof, there is a very good chance they have made a nest in your attic. Any opening will be exploited for access to the inside. The larger one is the mom and the others are her offspring. They are nocturnal, which is why you are seeing them at night. Shooting them should be your last resort as they are usually easily trapped and relocated.
They are not vicious unless they feel threatened or cornered, so let common sense prevail. Wait until Monday to call your local animal control for advice on safe removal. If they are in your attic one solution is to wait for them to be outside, or chase them outside, and then seal off all openings that could be used for re-entry.

Well AirSoft is the use of 6MM Plastic BB Bullets and the power of them are rated at max for A.E.G 1J or 350ish Feet Per Second at the muzzle. BB Guns just cover the spectrum of guns that fire BB bullets. I am personally an AirSoft person... but I ahve heard that if you own an Air Gun which fires BB at above 500Feet Per Second it is classed as a Section 5 Firearm or something like that, and require the police to know about it and e.t.c. But thats the law in teh U.K, so could be similar to the U.S... I don't know but thats what I think it is.

I say get an airsoft, or bb gun... Not enough to kill them, but will sting enough where they wont wanna come back..

Well I woudl go for an AirSoft and try firing with a sniper type gun... so that its accurate and will get them easy. It might agravate them OR say that you come back you will get more of this... or at this rate wait for Monday for the pest control...

I don't have an attic in my house - I have a 2 story house though.. the front part of the roof is a huge slant towards the front of the house and the back side is a slight one. I am not really sure where their nest is or where they stay, but I think the assumption of the mother with 3 kids are right though.. what do nests look like anyway??
