Rackmount woes

I went from an open faced 19" 7' server rack to an enclosed one. All of my equipment will work except my Dell Powerconnect 2708 gigabit switch. The 8 ports are on the front and with 1.25" clearence between the front of the unit and the fron door, leave little room.

Here is the picture of the Dell switch for those who don't know what one looks like Click here. It's currently in a temporary location until I can figure out the layout.

This is the rack I got with notations. Click here.

Any suggestions short of trading it for a rear mount gigabit switch?

The wires stick out too much in the front for the door on the new rack to close, right? Got it.

That switch is very shallow. Buy a standard rack mount shelf, remove the rackmount mounting "ears" from the switch.

Put the switch on the shelf. Use zip ties to hold it down if you're not comfy w/it just sitting there.

If buying a new shelf isn't possible, just put the switch on top of one of the servers...not the best arrangement, but one you may have to deal with. It's part of our SysAdmin job description you know. 😉

I have several shelves I can use so that might be a viable solution. I originally avoided a shelf idea but since I'm not the only one thinking it, I might do it then.
