Rackmount question: Can I use a drive-rail mounted 4U/2U case with this rack?

looks to me like the rack has predrilled holes, and your case, at least the one in the pic you link, already has the rank ears on it, so if everything is as it seems in the picture, you are good to go, without those other rails.

Probably not.

Rail-mounts (with no exceptions I've ever seen or heard about) require a four-point mount.

Many / most of the server cases require a four-point mount. Theres just too much weight and leverage to hang on one set of ears (the hole spacing on the rail is too close together).

There are a few non-rail cases that'll hang from just a front set of ears, Krex had some (www.krex.com).

For a standard rack, you'll have to use a non-rail case.

Good Luck

Thanks, ScottMac and Snuffy.

From what I understand, you don't NEED the rails; they rails just enable the case to slide out of the rack for maintenance purposes w/o having to completely remove the case from the rack.

So, can I mount the case using just the ears, or is there too much weight? Thanks for your help. :)

*EDIT*

Scott, is this what you meant by "rail-less cases?" These 4U units? Thanks!

Never seen a server mounted in a rack like that! I've only seen those racks used for light-weight stuff - switches, hubs, small routers, etc.

Actually, I take that back. I have seen big things mounted in those using shelves.

Something like this or this.

Those are good up to 75-pounds. They also made shelves that have support bars coming from the rear of the shelf to the front of the rack diagonally. Those could probably hold any weight.

Thanks Bozo1, that gives me some ideas...I wonder if the 2U case in my first post in this thread would sit on/in this shelf?

Don't see why not.
