While we may not necessarily like the content, I don't know if expulsion is warranted or legal. However, if it can be proven that school equipment/property was used in the making of the video, they might be able to expel them using that as a loophole.

As far as the video, it's irrelevant. The three morons weren't likely in a position where their racist views would impact anybody. If they were running the university or in charge of acceptance, that would be a different matter. I'm not any more hurt by a random person making insults than I would feel imbiggened because a random person said they like Black people.
I can understand why the President has to expel them though. A University's reputation (and funding) is built on being in demand, and thus being able to pick the top students.
If the school is seen as being full of racists or soft on people who are, the school will suffer. Definitely less minorities will apply. Why would you want to put yourself in a hostile environment for 4-7 years when there are thousands of other schools? Others won't go that don't want to graduate from a school with a bad rep. Expelling the idiots is in self-interest, nothing else.

I don't understand how any intelligent individual would think that this kind of shenanigans is permissible in this day and age.
thing is, there was a recent article about how gates is trying to very much change the aggie 'culture', changing peoples view of the aggies and aggies' view of the world. yet here hes reinforcing a closed 'cultish' "WE" mentality

From the strength of the president's letter I'm guessing this is not something like "black people like to eat watermelon and fried chicken." Something of that scale would not elicit much of a reaction whether it's directed at black, white, jew or muslim.
Something on the scale of, say, burning crosses WOULD elicit the same reaction whether it's directed at black, white, jew or muslim.
We need to see the video to really have an informed opinion. But I don't agree that this would necessarily be handled differently if it was directed at white students.
LOL I am sure you are one of the people who can't stand Christians because they merely disagree with other religions, too.

?? i am a christian.... but, i DO hate the christian right and it has nothing to do with the fact that they disagree with all other religions.
