It's currently sort of an open source project, in that the community is getting very large for building add-on cars and tracks and whatnot.
A slow process of adding features and constant improvement makes me think this could be one of the bigger race sim projects taken on in a long time.
It could seriously be a Gran-Turismo-3-killer, kind of game.

It's called Racer, and it works with Windows/Linux/SGI.
This is pretty much what the game looks like if you run it at 1600x1280@32bit FSAA. At those settings I get around 40fps, so I run at 12x10@32bit and get about 80fps. :) The tracks aren't quite as high quality, yet.
The forums are here, and the community is constantly pumping out new stuff.

Sorry for the rambling, or if you've already seen/heard of the game. I had been following it casually, and decided to install it today. It shows incredible promise, and for us sim racers looking for something other than F1 or Nascar games, this is the perfect diversion. :)

Hmm... free... racing... I think I'll download that right now. Hopefully this thing will stay free source and be all cool like Gran Tursimo.

Well I dl'd it earlier today, installed and ran it (without setting up my controller) just to see what I thought. I thought it looked good enough to keep but I wanted more tracks and cars since it only came with like 3 cars and 1 track. So I went digging through all the dead links on that site and finally was able to dl some cars and tracks while I went back to work.

Later this evening I decided to set up my controller and give it a whirl. But I can't get the damn thing to configure my Logitech WingMan Formula Force GP USB. I've tried everything I know including editing the .ini files in the ctrlsets folder. The x-axis (steering wheel) and buttons will work, but the y-axis (pedals) will not work no matter how much I edit the .ini file.

I don't see the point in playing a driving game if I can't use my wheel.

I'll give it a couple of days and see if I can't locate a ctrlset that will work. But with all the dead links I found today I'll probably just get fed up, delete the game and wait for an official release.

I had the same problem, when I first started, couldn't get the pedals to work. Here's what I did after I tried both the Microsoft wheels in the configuration menu(there's three or four for Logitech, maybe try all of them first). If it still doesn't work:

1) Open the Controller Test Utility in the Racer program group
2) Press the gas pedal all the way down, and notice which axis moves, and it's range of values(either write it down or remember it)
3) Press the brake all the way down and notice the axis and it's values.
4) Take both those values and go into your ctrlsets directory and fiddle around with the lwff.ini(that's the closest match, I would think) file. Find the throttle/brake section and enter those values. See if that helps.

Oh ya, and if you have software installed for your wheel within Windows, go into it and make sure it's set to have the pedals on seperate axis.

Also, while you're racing, hit CTRL+i a couple times, until the list of controls pops up, it'll show you exactly what's happening to your controller at all times, so when you hit the throttle, you'll be able to see if there's any conflicts, or what's going on. I'm sure I saw a .ini file for your wheel posted on the forums, I'll see if I can find it for ya.

Did you try running GLSetup(or whatever the OGL program that comes with your drivers is called)? I'm not familiar with the V3 cards, but this is an OpenGL game, so you gotta make sure your system runs OGL fine.
Also, the V3 cards can't handle textures higher than 256x256, so if the car makes use of larger textures, you might get a similar problem.
Try a few different cars, I have no idea which ones use 256x textures, and which use bigger, but if you can find a car that works, that might narrow down the problem.

Also, try this, from the site:

"Q: My car is flickering when driving (I have a Voodoo graphics card)?
A: First, try updating your drivers to the latest available. After that, try looking in Start Menu -> 3Dfx Hub -> 3Dfx Advanced Features -> OpenGL/Glide -> Depth Precision (32-bit) and set is to 'Disable'. Run the game in 32-bit mode (gfx.ini). You may try Omega 1.3 drivers (which have been known to help a V5 owner)."

Or, try this(I'm just finding stuff):
set environment_mapping to 0 (zero) in gfx.ini.

Some of the cars and trecks are very average but the good ones are very good, some of the graphics are excellent!
I have downloaded heaps, the links are plentiful and well worth following. If you haven't seem it running you must!

i stumbled across this about 5 days ago. it has potential, but in its current form it is really just some nice car models. but given time this could be an awesome game.
