It's currently sort of an open source project, in that the community is getting very large for building add-on cars and tracks and whatnot.
A slow process of adding features and constant improvement makes me think this could be one of the bigger race sim projects taken on in a long time.
It could seriously be a Gran-Turismo-3-killer, kind of game.
It's called Racer, and it works with Windows/Linux/SGI.
This is pretty much what the game looks like if you run it at 1600x1280@32bit FSAA. At those settings I get around 40fps, so I run at 12x10@32bit and get about 80fps.
The tracks aren't quite as high quality, yet.
The forums are here, and the community is constantly pumping out new stuff.
Sorry for the rambling, or if you've already seen/heard of the game. I had been following it casually, and decided to install it today. It shows incredible promise, and for us sim racers looking for something other than F1 or Nascar games, this is the perfect diversion.
