Isn't affirmative action "racial profiling"? This color can....that color can't. Aren't we profiling with defined criteria?? We certainly are!!

Affirmative Action is not Racial Profiling but more like another form of racism, with a twist that it kicks in when a certain race is under represented in some thing that is good (like having a job) as opposed to straught racism which works towards excluding already underrepresented parties. It is also a milder form of quota system.

To say the least I have thought about this issue a lot. And here are my thoughts about it:

The objective of racial profiling in this case would be to improve the chances of preventing another terror attack. Since Arabs committed the terror attacks and its them that are likely to do so again, in principle watching the Arab populace in North America more closely would improve the chances of catching them before the act.

But there is really no typical Arab look! There is one that we see projected in media but in reality Arabs range from Caucasian look to African look. (In my family alone my father and me have dark skin tone while my mother, brother and sister are as fair skinned as many North Americans). In addition to that according to US Govt. it self Al Qaida is a intl. organization with recruits coming from all over the Muslim world (and apparent from US as well). So really there no one set physical characteristic that a future terrorist would have. He can be a blond haired, green eyed, fair skinned guy from Middle East or Pakistan or he could be an African or an oriental from Indonesia. So what good is racial profiling based on physical appearance when there is no common physical appearance?

So we profiling could be based on names and points of origin. Admittedly Muslim names are distinct in most cases but again according to US Govt. many terrorist use or have access to false passports or documentation's. And most Islamic countries have non-Muslim populace. So its simple enough to come up with a oriental looking guy with a Christian name coming from Indonesia or a blond guy name Mark Sheldon (name of a Pakistani friend of mine) coming from Pakistan. As for point of origin profiling, most of the hijackers came from Saudi, Germany and one from Canada I think. They could have as easily come from England, turkey and France.

So what a racial profile look like? After 9/11 al Qaida would have to be stupid to send a 'Arab looking' guy from Sudan named 'Atta' to do their dirty work. And though they may be nut cases they are no organizational idiots (they sent a clean shaved womanizing and booze-drinking bunch last time).

So in my view racial profiling doesn't work. It simply gives the populace a false sense of security and fans their suspicions about that fundamentalist living next door.

So it sounds like racial profiling is a failed defensive response. What would be an effective offensive response to thwart future terror attacks??
