Racial Profiling is Dead to United Airlines

Now, they're harrassing *everyone,* not just the middle eastern looking people.

IMHO, this is an outrageous action to take over a book. Then again, at least they didn't burn the Harry Potte book.

The moral of the story is, the only safe book to fly with is Jane Eyre. 😉

That's crazy.

And spaceghost rules.
"And dont expect any sympathy from the shark!"
"Sharks and Bears, nature's best friends!"

What a bunch of fvcking idiots. Screw them. BTW, was it not UA that went to Congress or whoever an hour or two after the WTC crash and asked to be made exempt from any reparations or lawsuits?

what retards. it's harry potter for christ's sake, did they think muslim terrorists would be reading a book about magic?

That's sick fvcking ignorance.

It may suck, but better a little too sensitive of security, than to lax....

Yes, perhaps nobody should be allowed on with Tom Clancy books, or any thriller for that matter. In fact any book with the word "plane" in it should require that person who had the book to be beaten.

Yes, in these times of crisis, we respectfully request that all airline passengers arrive naked for their flights. They will be given a full body cavity search and then allowed to board if nothing is found. Clothes will be re-issued upon arrival to your destination city.

Better safe than sorry.

Sincerely,

United Airlines

Fine, their security is sensitive. They caught him with a book with a picture of a bomb on the cover. THAT DOES NOT MEAN HE SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFE FROM THEIR FLIGHTS.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't fault them. We better accept the fact that people are mighty nervous right now and will always err on the side of caution.

I don't think the kid did anything wrong, but bringing a book about sabotage (with a cover showing someone holding dynamite) aboard a plane is going to create suspicion.

I'm familiar with George Hayduke's books, BTW.

They were uncomfortable having the kid on the plane, that's their call.

I do fault them whenever they err on the side of caution for no reason and take away someone's liberty because of it.

I know they're a private company, but it still doesn't sit right with me. It probably wasn't the best choice of books, but it wasn't a pilot's manual in Arabic.

Oh well, next time I fly Ill pick a United flight, and play some games.

Only carryon luggage: Playboy mag.

You would think the kid would have enough sense the second time to just leave the books at home for the one day so he could get to where he needed to be. Obviously, the Airlines are taking security very serious there and I respect it. Especially when there goal is to keep us safe while flying.

There's nothing to respect here. This is knee-jerk reactionism gone wild. Running around like nazi book burning keystone cops isn't going to stop any real terrorists. On the contrary, it will distract security just enough to make a terrorist's job easier. While literally dozens of security agent's are busy checking out little Johnny's Harry Potter book and little Susie's When Lady Bugs Attack book, a whole gaggle of REAL terrorists could easily be slipping through.

This is just rampant stupidity, and is inexcusable. Remember, this started with Airport security. The airline employee was simply following their lead here (Although her stupidity has it's own unique quality).

<< "Those who desire to give up Freedom in order to gain Security, will not have, nor do they deserve, either one." - Thomas Jefferson >>

mdennison,

That quote is not Jefferson, but Franklin. And you've phrased it wrong. Here is the actual quote and cite:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

I've seen this quote bastardized in so many ways, but this is the first time I've seen it wrongly attributed.
