And most importantly: What's up with black people wearing the same clothes? Is this some new fashion trend I haven't been informed of

I have not seen a post by anyone that mentions that "what is up with those white bikers, they all dress the same is this some kind of new fashon trend?" Or what is up with all those Cathloc nuns? they all dress the same. You have never seen several teenage boys walking through the mall all wearing the same cloths or because they were white you did not give it a second thought.

Did it ever enter your thoughts that these girls were sisters? Or maybe some other group that has the desire to set themself apart by all dressing the same. Have you ever seen several young people who somehow enjoy the Gothic lifestile that are all dressed the same but did make any remark because they are all white? Ask yourself these questions and decide for yourself if your remark is racist.

I don't think you understand what I mean. I don't mean a group of people dressed in the same style, but people dressed in the exact same clothes.

You mention a group of goth kids. I've seen plenty of goth kids in groups. Generally wearing black, T-shirts of metal bands and trenchcoats are common.

However, for this group of goth kids to fit into what I'm talking about ,they'd be wearing the EXACT same thing. All of them would be wearing the exact same t-shirt. They have the exact same trenchcoat, and the exact same black pants. As if they all went to the store, and got 4 identical items off a rack, and gave one to each of them.

i dont know why they all dress the same, but i've been around philly enough to know that if i could go back in time 2 years and invent "the long oversized white t-shirt that hangs down to your knees" i would be a very rich man.

Also think about it the other way around. Group of whites dressed the same and the get harrased by another race, nothing is gonna happen.

Was my fiancee's sister being racist?
Yes.

I know a guy who thinks he's vehemently anti-racist, but he was scared to death of visiting the girl he was dating b/c of the neighborhood she lived in. Not a particularly high-crime area, about average for DC, and not majority white. Lots of black and brown skin.

NOTE: the guy is from suburban Colorado (Boulder, I think) where it is about as ethnically diverse as a loaf of Wonder Bread.

dude...u changed ur name back to notfred...ahhh i should start posting here often...i always have time gaps of nonexsistence in AT......

anyways...a lot of young people i know do that...dress the same way.....donno...it represents some form of "sisterhood"...

You're fiancee's sister is probably more racist than you. We're all racist and have prejudice built into us. Thats what happens when it has become so ingraned into our society, from one extreme (slavery/opression) to the other (political correctness). We can't simply forget or not mention/notice skin color anymore.

Would I have been afraid of getting my ass kicked? Hell yeah. Black people dressed the same, most definitely. Why do black people dress the same? Numerous reasons, however I'd say mainly because they want to identify themselves as a special group. They want to show they are black and the same.. i think FUBU (For Us By Us) is a good example. Racist? I guess... but it's more of a reaction to what has happened to black people and such historically. You can't simply just ignore influences of your grandparents, parents, society you live in, etc. So I deal with it and forgive for their short sidedness.

Why can't people clamoring about reverse racism ever see this? Affirmative action, political correctness, etc. are all sad attempts to undo the past. It will never work, and its racist in itself most often, but it is something that we can forgive and deal with so that this stuff will no longer be necessary in the future. We cannot simply forget about it and leave it as it is. Hope for the future. Fighting knee jerk reaction w/ another knee jerk reaction is just adding to the problems.

Sadly, racism will always exist. It has been created. You cannnot undo it. We can only hope to minimize it to where it is insignficant though.

It's all in the way the question is formed and what information you want to know.

You want to know why black people all wear the same clothes which is a broad generalization that all black people wear the same clothes.

If I had seen that, the question that would be in my mind is not why black people dress in the same clothes but why these women are all dressed the same way. I couldn't care less that they are black, just the fact that they are all dressed the same catches my attention.

"As we were leaving, we were walking along the sidewalk in front of the mall, and a group of 4 young black women (all about 20) walked by in the opposite direction, and all of them were wearing the exact same clothes."

You can tell the ages of Black (i.e., African Americans--not foreign Blacks) women? Well, you're putting me to shame 'cuz I can't. The kids look older than they actually are (upon disclosure of their ages). Well, I salute you. I can more easily guess the age of White girls than I can the age of African-American girls. 😱

In any case, back to your question: Your gfs sis sounds prejudiced. She seems to subscribe to the stereotypes. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, 'cuz even I sometimes get scared when I'm around some people of a kind. Next time she would be smarter to keep her mouth shut and make you think that she's only looking out for the interest of the Black ladies (i.e., trying to discourage you from what she perceived as a prejudicial statement).

On the other hand, you just sound nonsensical there. What you were saying made no sense really 'cuz I see African American ladies all the time and they aren't usually dressed identical. I also sometimes see White girls that are dressed identical. And then sometimes I am dressed similar to my siblings. There are many reasons people dress identical. It's far from racial generalisation. Sometimes it's just a trend (if it isn't gang related) or sometimes it's due to the event they are going to. I hope next time you see me dressed in similar clothes with my siblings or friends you do not assume that it must have everything to do with my race/skin tone. *Shrug!* (It rarely happens, but I do occasionally dress identical. There are also kids dressed identical thanks to their mums wanting to make them look identical or feel equal, but those are little kids.)

As we were leaving, we were walking along the sidewalk in front of the mall, and a group of 4 young black women (all about 20) walked by in the opposite direction, and all of them were wearing the exact same clothes. They weren't gang colors or anything, jsut all wearing the exact same shirt, pants, hat, and windbreaker kinda thing.

Now, a brief background:
The last time I was at the mall before this, a week or two before, I saw a similar group of young black men all wearing identical clothes (different from what the girls were wearing, just identical to each other).

I have never seen any other group of identically dressed people in this mall.

Anyway, back to the sidewalk:
After the identically dressed women walked by, I kinda looked over my shoulder, and said to my fiancee and her sister "What's up with black people all wearing the same clothes?"
This got a reaction of "what are you doing, shut up!" whispered angrily at me by my fiancee's sister. This continued with me saying "What, do you think I'm a racist now cause I mentioned someone's ethnicity?" and her responding with something like "What if they heard you? Jesus, you could have gotten our asses kicked."

Later on I said "If it was group of white women walking by, and I said 'what's up with white people wearing the same clothes?' would you have been afraid of getting your ass kicked?" she responded with, "You're white, it's not the same". So I said "How about if they had been white women, and I was black?" She kinda got embarrassed by that, and you could tell that she was afraid of pissing off a group of black women, but wouldn't have been afriad of a group of white women.

So. Was my staetment racist? Was my fiancee's sister being racist? Even if I wasn't racist, was I out of line? Would you have been afraid you'd get your ass kicked?

And most importantly: What's up with black people wearing the same clothes? Is this some new fashion trend I haven't been informed of?

Would you had asked your gf "what is up with white people dressing the same?" if you had seen a group of white men dressed the same and then saw a group of white women?

Why would you assume that something is going on with all black people because you saw two groups, a total of 8 people, dressed the same?
