"All you people that buy all your Toyotas and send that money to Japan, you know, when you don't have a job to make your Toyota car payment, don't come crying to me," Welch says in the ad. "All those cars are rice ready. They're not road ready."

Back when Toyota was surpassing GM for largest car maker, they voiced their opinion that they wanted GM and the other domestic makers to stay in business, else they feared a nationalist backlash. Looks like they underestimated the American people; instead of a nationalist backlash they are getting a racial backlash.

Somehow I doubt this dealer will bash German (white) car makers.

If i'm not mistaken, Japan taxes American cars a great deal and only allows so many to be sold in their country. This is to keep their domestic automakers at the top. We don't do the same here in the U.S. I think people are noticing that and thinking "hey, thats not really fair".

Did I just wake up in the 1980's again? They were saying this back then as well when GM still had 55% of the domestic market share and the Japanese manufacturers were forced to impose "voluntary" import quotas to give the big 3 time to retool and become more competitive.

Rednecks have been spouting this line since the late seventies.

Warmed over ignorance of world markets, combined with vague or even outright racism/jingoism...nothing new here. Still sickening after all these years.

At least he doesn't hate Canadians, since, you know when you buy a Ford chances are very high it's going to Canada anyway, a small percentage going to some incompetent suit in Detroit, the rest to Canada.

Wow, I'd forgotten about those voluntary quotas, but I do remember them now. Still, I think Cuda's right; at one time, didn't Japan tax American autos and other imports at much higher rates than we taxed thier products? I'm not sure if that's still the case. I'm a big fan of free trade, but it has to be fair for all parties.

Car dealerships are dependent upon the local community to stay in business. The customers who reacted to his ad by rushing down to buy new cars is puzzling since buying a new car is normally not an impulse purchase due to financing and price.

This sounds like a publicity stunt.

What I find amusing in all of this is the idea that if the Big 3 fail, everything comes crumbling down. What nobody is going to buy their assets, their IP, their plants, their infrastructure and continue producing cars? Even if all 3 died, their plants blew up, and their assets disappeared wouldnt foreign makers build more plants to satisfy the demand?

Toyota doesnt build 60% of the cars they sell in the United States in the United States because it is a nice thing to do. There are financial advantages to doing so.

I know, some truly believe that millions of people will be out of work if the Big 3--I mean when the big 3 collapse. Won't happen.

Too true, I used to be a huge american car fan, and am generally pro anything made in this country should the quality be better, but the reality is that we are moving away from being a nation of people who manufacture and more into one which manages and buys...really disheartening as I really value those who do something tangible, but for my money I can get better quality goods buying something made somewhere else, and cars are no exception, the two japanese cars we own are worlds apart from any of the domestics I had over the years.

Typical sour grapes and frustration from a dealer of a failing company whose competition makes better styled, more reliable cars with better resale value.

I've never understood how "rice" (a car term) is still being construed as racist. Yes, its origins were racist, but nowadays it has nothing to do with the nationality of the car or the driver and everything to do with how a car is modified. All it means is that the car has a bunch of added crap that does little or nothing to actually improve performance but is meant to make it look fast.

I also agree that "rice ready, not road ready" is totally nonsensical. *Any* car can be riced out, and obviously all cars are road ready.

At the very least, even if you're going to call "rice" a racist term, at least don't refer to people who use it as "bigots." I've seen tons of riced Cavaliers, Neons, and Jettas, and many of these cars (and others) are driven by Caucasians, not just Asians.

I dont really give a crap about Japan's tax code... If an American car company could build one car that was worth a shit, I would buy it, no problem. But that has not happened in my adult lifetime.

On the bright side, I have driven nothing but Honda/Acura for the past 12 years and never been on the side of the road (except for damn speeding tickets =))

Exactly, but then since when is P&N logical. Let those assume that rice (as it pertains to vehicles) is a racial slur, you and I know otherwise.

You probably haven't been paying attention lately then. Many new models (2000 and greater) are getting as high, if not higher ratings then the Japanese offerings. Even the Garage forum recognises this despite having quite a few fanboys on either side.

I can see them being somewhat protectionist when their car industry was just taking off. Many of their earlier offerings were waaay worse than anything we had. However, if American cars nowadays are so craptastic compared to Japanese cars, why won't they let them compete on an even playing field? (hopefully they have changed this policy, but I am not too up to date on their tax code..)

Racism or a misguided protectionist statement directed at the strongest perceived foreign threat?

Disclaimer: I am a Toyota / Nissan fan, since they (and their many suppliers) employ many citizens of my state.

Nothing more than a (poor) attempt to organize the community of purchasers.
