why is it that when we talk about other non-human sentient alien species, they're referred to as a race? wouldn't a race imply the ability to produce viable offspring?

Wouldn't a species need to be able to produce viable offspring in order to survive and prosper?

The only reason Klingons, Vulcans, Romulans, Elves, Halflings, Ogres, etc are referred to as "races" is because it sounds better than "species". They aren't all races of the same species.

But I believe in most stories there are mates between those groups, making them races.
