Raccoons! How do I get rid of em?

So it seems we have a couple of youngster raccoons that are under our deck in the back yard. They just came out to do some foraging (should they be out this early in the night? 7pm?)

Short of a gun (I dont have one and it would slightly illegal to shoot it of in the city anyways), dos anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of em?

They actually climbed up the tree and ended up on my roof for a while. My wife is super happy about all this.

Block off the area they're living in, and make sure there's no food for them. Personally, I'd enjoy their presence if they aren't screwing anything up. You don't get much wildlife in the city, and raccoons are pretty cool.

Garbage that's outside needs to be secured tight.

That's food to them. If there's nothing for them to forage for, generally they aren't a problem.

exactly. I got 2 kids myself, not to mention the neighbors etc that are always playing in the backyard. Which leads me to the question of how and why they would make their nest under the deck. There is ALWAYS traffic on it, especially during the summer.

In that case, maybe a high FPS airsoft might do the trick.

Or it just might piss them off, especially if they are rabid...

Seriously though, I'd call a pro. They're quite vicious when pissed off. I had two fighting outside my window the other night. Sounded like a cat tied to a cruise missile.

There was a thread in here a few years ago where somebody tried to get rid of a skunk by putting mixing sleeping pills with a can of tuna - the skunk ate it and drown in his pool.. I guess it worked. I wouldn't recommend that though.

Why would you want to get rid of them? They're made of meat, so they're edible. It's like the grocery store coming to you and they're free.

Go down to the local hardware store, purchase a hav-a-hart trap. Alternatively, see if someone has one for sale on Craigslist. Catch the little bastards & transport them at least a mile away. City, suburb, rural - doesn't matter - it becomes someone else's problem. If they're getting on your roof, the next step is damage. They're only cute til they become major pests.

Also, it's probably "illegal" to trap animals without a license, so just don't tell everyone til they're gone. Then, sell the traps on Craigslist- usually don't depreciate very much.

I saw at the hardware store the other day this sensor device that hooks up to your hose. I don't know exactly how it works, but when it sees a critter it blasts them with the hose.

cheapest way to go to kill them is the antifreeze in a dish, make sure its Ethylene glycol anti freeze without an embittering agent. but it will also kill any other animal that comes to drink the sweet tasting/smelling liquid (cats, dogs, mice, squirrels, etc etc)

Use a live trap to catch them, then go for a drive if you live in town (I dont, so I just do this in my yard).

Then all you need is a .22LR handgun, and since they are in the trap it should be really hard to miss.

I used this to get rid of the skunk that was under my house. Don't know if it'll work for 'coons though as they're smarter and larger and more fearless.
