R9700 Pro is just too slow now!

People often say video cards are getting too powerful, nobody needs Q3 at 400FPS, etc. Well, I was playing with a DX9 demo that totally brings the 9700 Pro to its knees! The system processors were waiting for the card! :Q

Even though the frame rates are quite slow, (quite often below 10 fps!) the eye candy is very much worth it!

The ATi DX9 demo (particularly the chimp demo) run very smooth. Looks like they have it optimised well for their card.

Yah but it's not like you literally play with the demos :p :D... as long as my games are fine i'm happy... i for one can't afford switching video cards every six months or however long ATIs product cycle is :(

RPG's could use these kind of graphics!

Forget FPS'! Most "hardcore" FPS (that is first person shooter NOT frames per second!) players prefer speed over IQ...

I'm not a first person shooter kind of gamer but i'm a frames per second fanboy... :D i play mostly racing sims... and having a slideshow can totally fark up my line and result in a very baaaad laptime... :( that would be pretty neat if you could get a photorealistic RPG game though... i don't think that's we'll get that close until Prescott and Grantsdale... :(

p.s. if no one told you. you can only have as many frames displayed as your refresh rate dictates. that is, no matter how many frames you're producing, if your refresh rate is 75Hz, you screen is updating 75 times/sec which means anythign greater than 75 fps is waste.. thus is born VSync :)

Check out the screen cap above. The frame rate is below 10!!! Even with a 60Hz refresh, it's far below the limit. Vertical Sync can be disabled as well.

I bought a Sony GDM-FW900 monitor entirely for gaming... and i can't game very well because i like to use resolution 1920x1200, and even with the highest end cards, my games are being stressed. And forget turning on AA/AF, even though it does make a huge difference even at that resolution. I could even buy the 9800, or hell, even the next card after, and it will probably just barely get by Doom3 if i want to play it at 1920x1200 resolution.

Of course i'm exaggerating a bit... gaming on a 24" monitor is simply amazing. But i do need to keep my hardware uptodate if i wish to play at the proper resolution and with all the eye-candies.

man, you can ALWAYS write a tech demo that brings the top of the line video card/CPU to their knees.

You can ALWAYS write a tech demo that makes the 9800 Pro and ALL the future video cards rendering just 1 frame for DAYS.

You can ALWAYS write a piece of software that requires more then what a piece of hardware can do.

You should only complain if the video card renders some low quality crap less then 10fps.

yes, but you aren't always getting the same line of frames every time so the picture can still be *somewhat* smoother.

i have a iiyama 22" monitor and i must admit after OWNING a 9700 pro and going to a geforce 3 ti 200, the qualitity is just pants.. the sheer looks that the ati card had over the geforce is unreal! (and im not talking about the game!)
my monitor will go up to and including 2048 x 1536 @ 32bit @ 85 hz and so far, i havent found a card that can support that higher res at that refresh rate.. also, games in this res ran fine on a ati card, even with a 'average' xp1800 with 512mbs of ram..
i have the need for speed.. and i want more... man i cant wait till i get my new system... shouldnt be long now...

Isn't that the point of a true GPU though, if I understand it correctly? It's supposed to do all the work on its own; passing graphics data over the system bus can slow things down. At least, that's how I think it works.:)

That's terrible colour blending, it looks like a topographical map! Look at the "ponds" of darkness along the left, or the one just below the task manager. You can also see it in the shadow area of the foremost pipe.

What's the problem? Was this in 8-bit colour or something?? I thought 3d cards got past this back in 1998!

Dude, look at that image. My brain can't render that at 10 fps. They tell my IQ puts me in the 99th percentile too!

That guy above said it well, you can always write a tech demo to put any component to it's knees. Stop whining like a ninny.
