I am looking for a GPU in the $500 ish range. I am stuck between these 2:

Sapphire Tri-X R9 290X

EVGA GeForce GTX 780

Noise and power is not a concern, but which offers better performance? I will be gaming at 2560x1440p, so will the extra 1GB of GDDR5 in the 290X be helpful? That said, I cant get the GeForce Experience with the 290X. Which should I buy?

Don't even waste time in the R9 290X, get an after market 290. Saves a lot of money and barely lose any performance.

At that resolution and between those two cards. 290x all day long.

The 290 is a lot cheaper and nearly as fast as 290x.

IMO having seen Geforce experience on friends system, it is worth zero dollars. He does like it though. My reccomendation, configure yourself and get the better performing card.

GE is not worth it?

So far, I am leaning toward the R9 290X Tri-X OC, as it received 11 more votes so far than the GTX 780. I guess the extra performance for the same price and extra 1GB of VRAM is a better deal than the GTX 780 GeForce Experience.

I think right now the best card to buy is Sapphire Vapor-X R290 at stock it is just as fast or faster then reference 290X if you want more performance then go CF. Unbeatable value. Nothing in the single GPU is worth the premium over that card for barely any more performance.
I see you're gunning R290X but it is just 3% faster at the same clocks then r290 and likely won't OC any higher, is it really worth the price premium? How much more is it?

If you have the option, get a 290 now (like Lepton mentions) and double it up when you need the extra push later. If Crossfire is not an option, I'd still suggest just going for the 290 and saving that money for a next gen if/when you need it.

Or spend your money however you like.

Just between the two cards If you have the money that Saphire 290x Tri-x is the way to go IMO. It's not a reference card. Saphire put a excellent 3 fan cooling system on it. It excels at high resolutions of 1440 and above.

Picked the R9 290X TRI-X OC. It's a great card. I now own 2 (from the 780Ti Classified in my sig).
I'd go a different route. Go used. People with mining rigs are getting rid of cards at a crazy rate. Best is to find someone who got into mining too late (say, February or march) so the cards haven't been working too long. You can probably go for 2 for the price of one.
Or, you can get the 290 Vapor X. That seems to be a great card.

The 5% speed difference from the 290 to the 290x isn't worth the $210 price difference. Get the non-X version IMO.

290X for sure, unless you are planning to get a new G-Sync monitor at any stage in the near future then 780 is a no brainer.

Agreed under air but if you are water blocking a reference 290X has a lot more over head and in CF under water is super quiet and cool (Like 50C max and doesn't throttle) easily does 1100x1500 Mhz under +0.143mV with both cards sync'd using TRIXX or AB.

You can go higher if you configure each card separately in CF.
