R9 290X memory clock causing lag in flash video playback

So my PC has randomly started lagging when playing back some flash videos in my web browser. Bizarrely it happens with twitch VODs, and some YouTube videos, but not live twitch or other YouTube videos.

The issue seems to be that the memory clock randomly downclocks to 150MHz for no apparent reason during playback, causing video playback to stutter and even the mouse cursor to lag.

I'm running the latest beta display drivers, and the issue persists across different web browser.

Anyone got any idea what's going on here and if there's any way to fix it? I'd rather not have to roll back my video drivers.

Is 150MHz the standard speed for idle desktop for that card? My 780 clocks down to 162MHz

Flash video does seem to be more hardware intensive than it needs to be imo.

Yeah, it downclocks to 150MHz idle at stock, and that's fine. I just can't understand why it has suddenly started failing to clock up properly with some flash videos (but not others).

While I never suffered from it, I remember certain people saying that the drivers had certain issues with flash.

Try a clean install of the latest drivers.

Actually I don't think it is the memory clock, since it's going up and down while watching a live twitch stream, but there's no lag.

Probably just some other form of driver issue. I'll try reinstalling.

I've experience similar Flash Delays and atikmdag.sys crashes viewing Flash on line.

I traced it down the using SpeedFan with it's horrendous drivers and removed the app from my system and it fixed the issue.

So be wary of Monitoring Apps - HWM Pro seems OK.

I don't know if you have the same problem as I do but I had problems with flash on my 4870X2, my 5970 and my 7970 x 2. I saw a similar thing, the card would clock down to idle and the video would stutter. In the case of the 5970 it had a small chance of crashing as well as the voltages for one of the steps above idle wasn't sufficient!!! In the end I fixed it by changing the clock speeds and voltages of the various modes. In essence I always had the RAM running at maximum speed and I boosted the core speed by about 40%. It made a moderate difference in idle power consumption but it always fixed my flash problem and my other slowdowns at the desktop.

I also wrote a utility a while ago that attached to the primary card via openCL and told it a program was coming, and then did nothing. The cards wake up in anticipation and run at full clock speed and everything works well. Was a toolbar based program so you could turn it on or off as you chose. Only problem was at the time there was a bug in AMD's drivers that caused stutters with crossfire, which more than likely they haven't fixed but it might also work for you.

So I just coincidentally bumped up into a thread about the same problem while browsing the net.

The solution is to : Turn off Hardware Acceleration in Flash.
