I'm a MMO'er and I want a card I can set my games (WOW, Tera, Rift, Star Wars) on high settings and still get nice FPS.

Which of these two cards are going to get me what I'm looking for?

Thanks

I think GT 760 should already max everything you want to play. Anyway, if you want to play AAA games you should pick the R9 290.

Those games are usually more demanding on the CPU, what cpu and gpu do you have now?

Out of those 2 cards the 290 is faster overall, might want to take a look at the gtx 970 as well. more similar price and peformance compared to the 290.

290, hands down.

Past $200, the launch of the GTX 900 series has caused a major disruption of pricing and sweet spots. Between the $189 R9 280 and $279 R9 290 there are some cards such as the R9 285 and GTX 770, but none of them are very interesting nor make all that much sense right now. With the R9 290 at $279, your best bet after the $200 mark is to just keep on going until you reach the first of our high performance cards.

At $300 or less there’s really no choice here. To that end AMD essentially wins by default, but the real winner is gamers who are getting a good card at a great price. Based on the second-tier version of AMD’s flagship Hawaii GPU, the R9 290 packs enough performance to tackle 1440p at medium-to-high settings, and its 4GB of VRAM means that it should have no problem even with demanding cross-platform games. Alternatively, if you want to drive 120Hz without spending a fortune, the R9 290 should get you there.

The cheapest GTX 760 on pcpartpicker is $190 after a $10 rebate. The 760 is a really nice card, but the R9 290 is a monster selling at ridiculously low prices right now. Newegg has the MSI R9 290 Gaming for $230 after a $30 rebate. Here is a comparison of the two:

If you have a nice power supply capable of handling a 250W card and have decent airflow in your case, it would be really hard to recommend a $190 GTX 760 over a $230 R9 290.

You might consider waiting for the GTX 960 which is supposed to release in Q1 2015, and which should be a pretty impressive card based on what we have seen out of Maxwell with the GTX 750Ti, GTX 970, and GTX 980, especially if you're running a 450W or 500W PSU. But the 960 is only supposed to have 2GB VRAM like the 760, while the R9 290 has 4GB.

just get a powerful + cheap(I never thought I would use these 2 words in the same sentence) r9 290, pretty much any after market cooler one is fine. I personally spent a lil more to get a good brand, but whatever works for you op.

You can get the MSI R9 290 for even cheaper than SteveGrabowski indicates. Use Visa Checkout (Promo Code VISACHECKOUT) - it only takes 5 minutes to set-up an account, and it gives you an additional $20 off. I bought the same MSI R9 290 a few hours ago from Newegg for $239 with free shipping, and there is a $30 MIR, so I will get it for $210. Insane!

Get the MSI Gaming 290. Most of those games are CPU limited so you'll be able to turn up AA very high on the 290 as a result. Make sure to overclock your CPU. It really helps in those dual threaded games.
