R9 280X vs HD 7970 for 1080P

Which one for 1080P max?

Say I would want to run Metro: Last Light, read some bench marks which favors the R9 280X. Do not know if I am overkill, here can I step down to the 7950 or 270X and still hit good FPS at high settings? Would be paired with a Haswell i5 4670, no OC and a 750W PSU.

If I want to go Crossfire down the road, do I have the PSU to handle dual cards?
 
750W is fine for a 7950/7970/280X crossfire setup.

You will not be overkill for 1080P with either of those cards with modern games. The 280X is a bit faster, and if you can find it for a good price, go for it. But a 7950 (overlocked) or 7970 would work too.

As would a GTX770 if you can find one for a good price. Although the 280X is cheaper from what I have seen.

Seems like the 280X are lower, just wondering if the 7000 series will be history in due time, I read a few are going to be discontinued.

How long can you wait? A custom R9 290 would be right in your budget, but may take months to get here.... If you don't mind noise and heat, then maybe a reference 290? That would the fastest for your dollar, without having to deal with Crossfire.

Probably a few months, GPU will be the last thing I buy going to piece meal my system together over time. The 290X looks like it's $500+ on Egg?

I don't think anything this generation will fair any better than the 7950+, the lead on faster chips will evaporate so quickly nobody will care if the 290 gets 27 fps and the 7970 gets 22.

If you overclock the 7950 is within probably 5% of the 280 (which is just a 7970) clock for clock.

Edit: You're late to the party, 28nm is on the tail end waiting for 20nm.
