hi guys, im hoping i can get some good advice here, this is by no means the first place i've asked (the other places i've received very few responses, unfortunately) so im hoping you guys have some tips for me:

my card does not work at all (see my attempts at resolution, below)

Specs

  • GPU: MSI r9 280x, single card
  • CPU Intel Core i3-4130
  • MOBO Gigabyte H87-D3H, ATX
  • 2 x RAM Team Elite 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
  • SSD Seagate 600 Series 480GB
  • PSU Corsair CX600M
  • Monitor ViewSonic VX2270SMH-LED 22-Inch IPS
  • OS upgraded to Win10 64 bit, from Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit - OEM

i initially had the latest stable Radeon driver, 15.7.1,

Every game except Mini Ninja (for some reason) crashed in the menu screens, or went into loop within seconds of actual gameplay. Mini Ninja ran fine at 60 fps no prob.

i uninstalled Raptr and that Gaming Evolved thingy. No luck.

i uninstalled and installed the entire AMD software. No luck.

I checked power connectors. All fine.

Someone suggested I try the beta driver 15.11. No luck..

(btw, after all my efforts, Mini Ninja also no longer works, and instead crashes in the menu screen, just like the rest of them.....)

i've run out of options.

SO close to giving up and getting a new Nvidia or something. Any thoughts?

Why buy an nvidia card, when you could, you know, RMA the card to the manufacutere since it sounds like it's a defective card? :|

All vendors no matter the brand have dud cards. I would return or RMA it.
Not sure why you think nvidia cards can't have the same issues.

BTW, you didn't mention what the specific crash was. Are we talking BSOD type, or, what?

Do you have the option to try the card in another system to make sure it is the card itself and not another piece of hardware. Otherwise like others said RMA that sucker.

Remove the card and try the intel HD4400 graphics? You will have to lower settings a lot, but if you still get crashes, then it wasn't the 280x.

unfortunately, i bought this used off craisglist lol :( so no RMA option for me. it looked fine when i visually inspected it, and it still LOOKS fine as far as the physical product. but i will admit i didnt demand him to demo it in his computer , as that woudl've been a silly hassle for the nice, low price i got the card for.

the error im getting is the pop up message from Catalyst saying "driver softrware has stopped working and has recovered" (im paraphrasing, but close enough).

someone in another forum suggested downclocking by using afterburner program, do you think that's a good idea? i know that in 'stock version' this card is a slight overclock from the 'normal' r9 280. but then again, it's a factory overclock so i dont see whats the issue....

You say you bought it from craiglist. That guy might have used it for mining. Lots of guys that used cards undervolt them and that's why it crashes to desktop. My cards when I undervolted them did that (but worked for mining). I've seen ppl complaining about this lots of times, and it was just the voltage.

Try upping the voltage to 1.2V and see if the card works.

Easy fix - if you have a card with dualbios just switch the button and the backup bios might not had been changed. The bios switch button is a tiny button on the card. Do this with your PC turned off.

Hope it helps
