Well, Far Cry 4 on the PS4 and Xbox One uses "HRAA", which supposedly isn't possible on PC using DX11
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-far-cry-4-face-off

Using similar hardware to PCs is one thing, but there are still differences between their APIs. We normal users don't even know whether today's games are using the higher-level or lower-level APIs.

The 360 could also lose to modest PCs in the beginning. Quake 4 had bad performance on the 360.

Does anyone still remember what kind of PC you needed to outperform the original Xbox?

no PC gamer is using 1.6GHz Jaguar CPUs, so the CPU overhead should be well compensated, the link you posted also shows some advantages for the PC version, and they could have used Mantle (the game developers, not the article)!?

there is a very clear pattern if you look at all the multiplatform games from last year, PCs with regular CPUs and $150 cards are in a good position against the PS4; and DX12 should help in the future;

as for the 360, I think most games were harder to match with a mid range/low end PC back in 2005/2006 than they are now.

Might be worth pointing out that many top shelf console games are already rendered at lower resolution and upscaled. Makes me believe that 1080P from a console and 1080P on a PC might not be equivalent in appearance.

PC is with a 270X will be better for cross-platform games, but PS4/XB1 will have exclusives that you can't purchase on the PC. If you mostly play cross-platform games, or games where mouse/keyboard are hugely important to you (strategy, MMO, FPS), then PC is the way to go. If you play a wider variety of games such as sports, racing and 3rd person action adventure and care for console exclusives, then getting a PS4 over a PC with a 270X isn't a bad idea. However, the more games you buy on the PC, the more you save which means over 7-8 years you'll save enough to easily afford 1-2 CPU/GPU upgrades. I tend to think console and PC gaming isn't exclusive as there is no way I want to miss out on some of those awesome PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4, God of War, Bloodborne and Gran Turismo.

That's the best way to think about it. GF and I will probably buy a PS4 sooner or later. Exclusives are always a good reason to have a console if you can afford it on top of a good PC.

This.

Xenos was a powerhouse. Later ATi VLIW5 GPUs would suffer from utilization issues. Geforce 8 series manage to reclaim the performance efficiency necessary to really show why PC gaming is a cut above. I shoulda forked over the extra $100 for the 640 MB version of the 8800GTS instead of the 320 MB though :D

But I could still play CoD4 at 1440 x 900, 4x AA, full 60 FPS without issue when it came out! No 600p for me!

In 2011 john carmack tweeted that a console is 2x as fast as similar hardware in a PC.

The point being a PC has a great deal more overhead.

And those games are usually tailor made for specific hardware. Porting stuff to other systems (even cross platform) has usually proved slower.

What about Nintendo exclusives? Super Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles X...:D

PS4 GPU is also only 800 mhz and has 1152 shaders

270x has 1280 shaders clocked at over a GHz and doesnt have to share memory and doesn't have to overcome a tablet cpu

That's true, but even if you have a generic 7850 (lower than PS4 GPU) with 1024 shaders and lower clock speed, it will still run better than PS4 for BF4 as long as you have a SB or better i5.

It's just a matter of CPU bottlenecking. For tons of games it's not an issue, but for things like BF4 it definitely is. As usual YMMV depending on specific game.

guys guys... can we be grown up and civil...
Its turning into a video card section flame where its Green (NV) Vs Red (AMD)....
:D

There are many consoles exclusives which PC users will never get.
At the same time, there are many games which can be played on a whole different level with stereoscopic multi screen setups, and full bloated 3D, which a console user will never get to experience.

personally i am spoiled silly on my system.
I am running 2 980GTX's in SLI.
I run everything at over 60fps+
To me a 30fps game looks choppy. Its way worse then the SLI micro shutters we get.
Even 45 FPS and i start cringing... thats how spoiled silly i am..
Thats the only reason why i dont play on a console, my eyes are too accustomed to 60fps.

but i wont hate or deny a console user, because some people like black coffee, i prefer mine with lots of milk and sugar. :)
