Retail Radeon 32 MB DDR
69.2 fps @ 165/165
77.4 fps @ 196/196

Retail Radeon 8500
88 fps @ 275/275
89 fps @ 300/300

This may not look too good at first. But now look at 1600x1200...

Retail Radeon 8500 @ 1600x1200 for Pentium 3 700MHz
80 fps @ 275/275
82 fps @ 300/300

It looks like that the bottleneck on my system is not the video card, it is instead CPU bound. This can be seen because there is very little drop off as the resolution increases. A quick way to check this out is to bump up the CPU.

Retail Radeon 8500 @ 1600x1200 for Pentium 3 933MHz
93.7 fps @ 275/275
97.8 fps @ 300/300

A 33% increase in CPU speed yeilds a 17% increase in frames per second.

I really do wish that video card reviews would give a CPU scaling test since not everyone has a 1.4 GHz CPU. AT used to do that, but they have quit for several of the last reviews.

Then again, for the 8500, I wished that they had talked about some of the other features of the card in the initial review: Hydravision, Truform, TV-out, etc.

Good investigation...you may want to check the header of this thread..."R8500 enchmarks on Pentium 3 700/933" <<<something wrong there. ;)

What CPU were you using when you performed the 3DMark2001 bench?

Thanks.
