Rumor was it taped out the first time around. Any confirmation? Possibilities? Possible release dates?

64 shader pipes, at a 65nm process? Sounds like a monster card, but I'm not holding my fingers crossed on those specs. Ati had enough trouble getting the 90nm 16-pipe r520 out the door. If the 90nm process matures, and I expect it would, the 90nm r580 might be introduced in 6 months, hopefully with 32 pipes, and that would already make any current cards look pathetic in comparison. But when you consider doubling the pipes to 64, and moving to an even newer process, it sounds like a really lofty goal, I hope they dont fall short in the process of trying to accomplish too much with too little time. I'm guessing we wont see the r600 until early 2007.
On the other hand, they've already successfully designed the r500, so if all they do is expand on that design, then it's not beyond their reach to produce such a card a year from now, although it might have a completely different concept of "pipes" than what we've seen so far.

I having a helluva time trying to understand why the R520 took 3 tapeouts to get halfway right, and yet I hear that R580 and R600 are already taped out successfuly. How the F is that possible? Why did R520 give so many problems. It's only a 16 pipe card, and yet this supposed R600 has 64? This makes me just think that the R520 is just a modified R420 with SM3.0 added and a little pipeline optimization. Color me confused. 
Possibly due to the fact that R520 is their first 90nm card. Also, reportedly, ATI put a lot of resources into developing R500 for the Xbox360, and who knows what ATI is using for Nintendo's next gen system.

I don't see how that logically follows? How does R520 having an extremely complicated tapeout lend itself to the notion that R520 is simply a modified R420 with SM 3 bolted on? Wouldn't the complexity of tapeouts make you think that maybe there's a little more going on? Such as the already-announced 512-bit Ring Bus, for one? I'm just trying to follow your line of reasoning here...

My understanding is they thought the problem was leakage, and finally discovered that the problem was a soft ground. They state this is the reason clock speeds are so good ... 10 days or so and we should know. :beer: Than hopefully all the early birds will buy one, discover all the annoying driver problems, prices will come down - and than I can buy.
What a suprise, Rollo has come to crap on yet another ATI thread. I am shocked and appaled. :roll:

There is no new info available, this is nothing more than yet ANOTHER opportunity for people to spread rumors and for flame wars to ensue.
Let's not even bring R600 at least until R520 is out....please.

i think rollo should be banned. i remember that one of my friends made a thread on here about Ati cards, then rollo shiitted all over it about nvidia pwned everything. i think its gotten to the point that rollo needs to quit being such a fanboy, and stop :|
It may be a useless thread to you, but that doenst mean anyone who wants to discuss the r600, or even any rumors of the r600, needs your permission to do so. There are plenty of rumor threads around, often the only info we have on upcoming products are rumors, and it's possible to discuss such rumors without erupting into flames.

Who the hell cares if he thinks nVidia is better? Who the hell cares if you think ATI is better? Get a effin life people and quite biching, because that is all you know how to do.

No, they care about money and the same exact goes for ATI.
Get a clue people, when will you realize, it isn't about ATI versus nVidia. It is about breaking performance barriors and seeing computer games take off to another level... But oh no, you could care less about that, because all you care about is fricking ATI or nVidia dominance. Hell, you could care less if we were in the dark ages, as long as nVidia or ATI was king of the hill. You could fricken care less if computers existed, so long as ATI or nVidia dominated.
From this point on, every fanboy is labeled as an insecure, weak individual.
It is not possible from what I've seen for these types of discussions to NOT erupt into flamewars. I see no new information being brought forth here, just more of the same old crap that can be found in a dozen or so other threads made within the last week. It's a viscious cycle, if someone finds NEW information on whatever then I say go for it and post the links. But don't start threads with "I heard a rumor that XXX taped out", provide no links, and generally don't give a direction for discussion. This just allows people to jump in and start flaming.
It's a self perpetuating cycle, if this forum was moderated properly these threads would be locked immediately.

The xbox 360 should give us some idea of the direction the r600 is going in. I hadn't heard it had taped out? Supposedly r580 is up and running as it did not have the soft ground problem. Read that the low end cards r515 will have performance on the same level as the 9800xt - not bad for on the cheap.
