While it's not probable, it's certainly possible.
No, it's not. The R600 (like the G80) has been under development for YEARS. It is WAY too late in the game for either company to make any major changes to their architecture. The only things they CAN do are minor (PCB, cooling, die shrink, memory speed/type, etc).
