If the R600 is supposedly coming out in December what is the incentive to get the 850SLI, R520 or even the R580 if thats what is going to exist?

Unless the R600 is going to be a $1200 card alone.

You do mean December 2006 right?

Someone made the comment the R600 was on the roadmap for December 2005. Since its pretty much designed in XBOX 360 form Im guessing it wouldnt be to hard to port to PC. But I bet Microsoft wont allow the architecture to be released for PC for some time buried in some contract somewhere.

What ive read from ATi is its to be released at the end of next year. It would be a lot of work for them to port a console orientated GPU to a PC orientated GPU. Theres a lot of architectural differences as they have to accomadate a wide range of systems and make it far more robust than in a console. Also special coding and architecture have to be inputted as there will be different ways to code an engine. While on a console it can all be done pretty much in one singular way. As to why you get better graphics with each succesive sequel or game from the same devs as they learnt how to better use the graphics.

The specs for the next ATI card seem to be in dispute. It has been officially delayed although the reasons vary as to why. One of the reasons may be a quick change in features to better match the 7800 so we may not know for sure until the card is released. Not to mention that it will take longer to find out as I'm sure ATI is hesitant to do another paper launch like crossfire after the 7800 came out and was for sale on the same day. It seems the 7800 will have the top end all summer long.

I heard from ATi reps about the R520 and the R580.

R520 in september if I am not mistaken?
90nm process with only 24 pipes working.

R580 by christmas if im not mistaken?
same process with all the bugs fixed and 32 pipes.

Sorry, I didnt hear anything from anywhere on the internet, just what ATI reps told me directly. I'm not trying to start a crap thread, just curious if anyone has heard similar things.

The most recent I've heard is that R520 is the highend 32 pipe monster (and maybe a card with 8 pipes disabled) R30 is midrange (most likely 12 or 16 pipes) and R515 is lowend (most likely 8 or 12 pipes). As for ATI having no clue about SLI, they knew they just thought it wouldn't take off like it did (bad miscalculation).

Technically, SLI didn't really take off. Its for the uber-elite, ultra rich crowd. Very few normal people have SLI. Some foolish people bought 6600GTs for SLI, then tests confirmed it to be slower than a singlt 6800GT card.

I doubt 7800GT(X) SLI will take off either, 1200 dollars for just the graphics system is plain crazy. 600 is too much, 500 is too much. 400 is my limit, no higher. Hell, I remember the days when 250 was an expensive high end card. 🙁
