C63 = Automatic. Yuck! Not to mention it looks far too busy with its bodykit and exhausts, etc.

New E92 M3 for me. I sat in one the other week while down the dealership; I totally fell for the car right there and then. The car looks so different in person. I originally thought it looked all out of proportion from the pictures on the net, etc., but seeing it in person certainly changed that.

It?s a fairly conservative car, considering its status as the flagship 3 series, and that?s what I like.

Haven?t heard the V8 grumble and exhaust note in person yet ? hopefully it doesn?t sound too dull when compared to the previous exhaust note of the E46 M3, because that?s one of the things I truly loved about the previous M3.

E92 M3, Manual only, YUCK.

C63 for me, don't feel like doing my commute in that.

Someone touting an M3 talking about busy body kits? Have you seen the C63 in person, it looks better in every way but hey, thats JMO.

Get it?

Oh, and if you like your exhaust notes to sound like bumblebees in your ear, thats great. :D

It's not manual only, theres an optional DSG transmission with the flappy paddles.
M3>C63. End of story.

You obviously missed the point that the gearbox is preference and it seems they took that into consideration in this review and judged the cars by their performance and luxuries.

How about we create a new term here on ATOT: since we have grammar nazis, how about gearbox nazis.

Why would you buy a car like this to commute? Just buy a sloshy sack to commute in and drive a car of this type at the weekends.

Auto=fail at this level of car. SMG/DSG/Manual FTW.

<- Gearbox nazi

PS: I'm going to go with the fact you've never been in or driven an e46 M3. Judging it's sound by YouTube videos is weakness incarnate.

what are you talking about DBZ?

the RS4 is a performance sedan, and comes with manual only for a reason. DSG might be faster, but it's simply not the same as shifting the gears yourself. i'd never buy a DSG unless it were a car meant for a track.

RS4 ftw

I'd happily have an RS4 with DSG. I currently run a six speed, but I don't mind the new generation of automated manual 'boxes.

Wrong about that one.

Why buy this car for a commute, I don't mean to sound rude but I HATE people like you who think there car is too "nice" to be driven day to day.

Please, let me guess, you trailer queen your Ferrari too that has 1252 miles on the odometer.

The car is a luxury sport sedan, its made to be comfy and sporty at the same time, its not like your commuting in a stripped out lotus elise with plastic windows.

If im going to spend 65 grand on a car, you better bet im going to get the most out of it.

The Mercedes 7 speed may not be a DSG but it performs similar to one, the shifts are responsive, throttle blips, etc.

SMG's on the other hand are just crap, good thing BMW went to a DSG design this time around.

SMG gearboxes are not crap by any stretch of the imagination. What are you on?

IMHO, there are advantages and disadvantages to the SMG vs the DSG boxes, and even the current gen autos.

SMG gearboxes do tend to have a very poor "auto" mode, with weird shift point logic and some jerkiness. SMG III is not as bad as the SMG II in this regard, but it's still very noticable when compared to auto or DSG boxes.

SMG does allow you to downshift multiple gears much faster than DSG, which goes 1 gear down at a time. I haven't tried the new M3 yet, so I'm curious to see how well they handle it. It's very noticable in Audi's implementation though.

Like posted bellow, I don't care for the automode(not the best in the city and slow moving traffic) and the most responsive setting always seems to be jerky, not my cup of tea.

The DSG gearbox is much better IMO.

Well, you messed up, you sound rude. Not only that, but the stereotype is not even close to me. I run a manual even when I commute because I'm not a whiner who can't handle a clutch in a bit of bumper to bumper.

With regard to the M3 I guess it must just sound like Bumblebees. Yeah, it sounds like Bees. Because you say it does.

Also, 'their'.

I am curious who here owns any of these cars?

Alot people crapping on stuff and I bet they do not own or have ever driven these cars

I have never driven SMG but those who have indicates there is a learning curve but once you master it is a great transmission

BTW, pretty sure the new transmission in the M3 is a DCT(dual clutch transmission)
http://www.bimmerdrivers.com/f.../showthread.php?t=3350

I have a 2008 650i convertible with the sport auto and love it....I no longer desire a manual for everyday driving(although I do miss it at times)

If you have never driven a BMW please dont trash it

There is a definite difference in the perfromance and handling with a BMW(MB are real good offf the line but do not handle like BMW..which is probably not on par with Porshe)

BTW a two minute test drive does not count

No one, its my thread.

Way to go off topic but whatever.

http://www.encyclopediadramati...index.php/Grammar_Nazi

As stated previously, Grammar Nazi is a term given to one who incessantly corrects the spelling/grammar/usage of others.

Back on topic please to anyone who actually read the magazine.

I have driven both the E36 (3.2) and E46 M3, both were manual transmission.

I?ve been a passenger in plenty of other high performance BMWs, however.

I would pick the M3 too. Somehow I'm thinking the Pontiac G8 GT seems like a bargain for about $30k...

No doubt at $30k or so ..very nice price point..the problem is once you really drive a BMW(and I bet a nice Porsche), there is a difference that is seen and felt

I will not diss the performance or handling of a G8 as you cant compare it fairly to any of these much higher priced cars..stupid comaprison

M3 $$$$, but to the person who desires its performance and handling it seems almost unparalleled but to someone else the $$$ is not worth it

Some spend the extra on a car, motorcycle, boat, plane, or whatever there vice is

My OP was to point out most who were trashing the SMG had never really used it...I have not and pretty sure it would not be desirable to me...DCT maybe if they have and real good auto mode as well

BTW..hi RichUK
