+r or -r DVD's

Whichever is cheaper.

I use +R with my burner, but that's because it can only use +R.

I don't think it really matters otherwise.

thanks for the replies

if -r is the compatible one, then what added feature does +r provide to make it more expensive?

I don't think there's really any advantage.
My guess is some companies are getting royalties or something.

R+ lets you do bitsetting (makes the player think it's a proffesionaly pressed DVD rather than a home made one) which gives you even better compatibility than R-

The NECs don't always offer bitsetting support on the firmware, worth getting a patched version installed if you're going to burn any movies with it. Check out www.cdfreaks.com for liggy and D's stuff, clever people.

I believe CDFreaks had an article about +R vs -R. -R is generally more compatable than +R, but if you have a burner that supports bitsetting for +R, then it's almost guaranteed to be compatable.

whatevers cheaper.
+r is probably superior for data if u multisession since it wastes less space between sessions. i don't really use multisession so i don't care heh😛 discs are dirt cheap anyways. and u really have to have a lousy player to not recognize a disc these days

Neither is more compatible anymore. This was some dumb test they ran like 5 years ago that people still use. If your dvd player is 5 years or older you might have problems but otherwise 90% of all standalone dvd players will play both -R and +R's. My DVD player is 8 years old and plays +R's just fine.

The other thing to keep in mind is that media itself is sometimes the problem reguardless of wether it is minus or plus. Some DVD players don't like certain kind of media.

I seem to remember that the +R allows you to do video editing directly on the disc versus editing a video segment and then having to reburn it to another DVD.

yea can't wait for them to drop so i get a new burner.

i don't know why you'd need to do bitsetting just go with the cheapest drive

Direct On-disc Editing
Refers to the ability of a system to make changes directly to an already written disc, without the need for a full rewrite of the entire contents. Very handy when a user wants to change for example the menu screens on a disc that already contains video. DVD+RW is the only rewritable DVD format that allows on-disc editing within its basic format.

Info is from: www.dvdrw.com

According to the claims of the DVD Alliance, using a DVD+R/+RW recorder will let you do the following:

1. Instantly eject without having to wait for finalized formatting.

2. Ability to record one DVD disc partially on PC and partially on television.

3. Background formatting: while the disc is being formatted, you can simultaneously record on already-formatted portions of the same disc.

4. Enhanced ability to edit filenames, movie and song titles, and playlists.

5. 100% compatibility with all other DVD players, while still enjoying these extra recording features.

I noticed a few DVD recorders only read/write -R. The samsung one I want only does -R so I am in the process of finishing my +R's and switching to -R. I hate format wars!

-R offers compatibility with all dvd players, xbox, playstation. +R will not be recognized for video in some of these and just hang. Though most players are now dual format a few will still only load -R

+R + bitsetting FTW

I cannot believe people here still insist on saying that -R is more compatible.

Frickin' read up on bitsetting you guys...
