When my son and his best friend were talking about joining my beloved Corps, I made them sit down and watch Full Metal Jacket...to see what they were getting into...

God Bless R. Lee Ermey...or more appropriately, Gunnery Sargent Hartmann...That character embodied everything good about a Marine Corps Drill Sargent.

"Who said that?

Who the fuck said that?

Who's the slimy little communist shit, twinkle-toed beautiful being down here who just signed his own death warrant?

Nobody, huh?

The fairy fucking godmother said it.

Out-fucking-standing!

I will PT you all until you fucking die!

I'll PT you until your assholes are sucking buttermilk! "

Semper Fi! Gunny.

I was worried this would be an obituary. I checked wikipedia, and he's not as old as I thought.

He also played Coach Bowerman in the movie Prefontaine. I love his take on that role, although I'm sure he'll always be best known for his role in FMJ.

The character was Ermey, he was essentially playing himself. It's like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino - is it really a stretch for Clint Eastwood to play a cantankerous old man?

Didn't he get some kind of medal or award from the Marines for his positive contributions to the Corps?

He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant by the now National Security Advisor. According to wiki, he's the only man in the history of the Marines to be promoted after retirement.
