R.I.P Justin.tv

justin.tv changed to twitch.tv for most things a long time ago.

Justin.tv is a stupid name for a brand anyway. Who is Justin, and why do I give a shit about his website?

Goodbye to the old site where I got my pirate football streams.

Hello to the new site where I will get pirate football streams.

Isn't Google buying Twitch? Probably don't want to be sued into oblivion. Offload the troubled assets before the purchase.

Watched the video and saw some guys I never heard of before, talking about some supposedly "revolutionary" idea about broadcasting their lives on the internet. I don't have even a remote idea what that's all about.

I thought it was were people re-broadcast copyrighted material like TV feeds.

Whatever. The next one will do it better, with better selection and higher quality.

Justin TV is where Man vs Game got his start.

Now he's a Twitch TV star whose slated to make $100k this year.

Even though I'd never visited the site, I think its a play on "this just in" during news broadcasts..

Yeah this is almost definitely because of the Google buyout of Twitch.

I'd never even heard of justin. I've heard of twitch but never been there. I'm an exhibitionist, not a voyeur.

You can't have voyeurs without exhibitionists. Twitch is about giving the latter a place to expose themselves to the former. Granted Twitch is gaming focused, but there's plenty of sites for all the various ways people might want to expose themselves.

Seriously? Have you not ever seen like 75% of Youtube videos?

I think Justin was more about that but then there was a pretty big crackdown on that so they adjusted their focus so it became basically Youtube but being able to broadcast live (which brought about Twitch after they got inundated with gaming focused content). I'm not sure if they were pushing for monetizing that content (both for themselves and the people making content) before Youtube or not.

I still can't believe that any of those "Let's Play" channels make money, let alone enough for the people to rake in serious bank. Isn't there some not entertaining ass clown that has a "gaming" channel on Youtube that makes millions? Pewpewpie or something?

There's a guy that makes "metal" covers of video game music that apparently has started to do Twitch, and its sad that he probably makes more from playing games and just saying stupid shit than he does from producing music (even if you argue that's not as involved as producing original music, it definitely requires substantially more talent).

I used to watch some streams, even gaming streams (before twitch existed) on justin.tv, but it was like 10 years ago or something, I haven't visited the site in probably 5 years...

It all about advertising dollars. Look at Pewdiepie. The guy has over 28 million subs. If only 10 percent tune in regularly and hang on his every word that's 28k people. 28k people who are going to buy what he's currently playing/wearing/eating, etc.

Man doesn't have that kind of pull, but he does have a lot of followers. I tuned in last week and there were nearly 5k players tuned in. That's a lot considering most people have a handful. That's if they're lucky.

Why do you find it hard to believe that these guys are making the money they make? Is it any different from the crap Jerry Lewis was doing in the 50's? He was saying and doing stupid sh*t and was getting paid handsomely. Millions of dollars! The only difference is the medium has moved online. Pewdiepie and Man are doing more than just playing video games. They are putting on a show that a lot of people find enjoyable.

Finally, it all looks like it would be an easy thing to get into and make a lot of money. Not anymore. They hit it at the right moment. It's all about timing and they were smart enough to realize it. Look at Twitch. There are hundreds of people streaming their games now. It's very difficult to stand out unless you game competitively and/or you have an amazing personality that people genuinely like.

IIRC the site had numerous pop-ups, wanted you to DL a "player" to watch stuff in HD and was a pain in the ass to use in general. I guess there are still enough stupid people that will actually DL and install "players" and "download managers" without realizing the pile of shit they just infected their hard drive with. F-ing NFL, anywhere else in the world NFL games can be purchased on a PPV format, but since Direct TV handed over a huge check for exclusive north American rights that's not possible to do here, you have to switch to Direct TV, ( impossible for a lot of condo or apt. dwellers) and buy their NFL package. Basically the NFL just told those who use cable "sorry, sucks to be you"..

As pointed out, you might want to check your math.

That's exactly my point, its not about them actually being entertaining its about their willingness to pimp themselves out for advertising. Once they get popular there is a high probability that they turn into paid marketing shills, its often blatantly obvious too and yet people continue to support them.

With regards to Twitch though, there's a bunch of people on there making a lot of money just from people paying through the Twitch system, and it blows my mind. There's nothing special about what they're providing, and yet people are throwing money at them. Half the time the people are straight up stupid (and I'm not talking about them playing a stupid character, they literally don't know what they're talking about).

You're seriously comparing Jerry Lewis to these people? 😱 I suppose that explains an awful lot... And I'm not even a Jerry Lewis fan, but damn...

That I think is hitting the mark. They did time it right but, I think the whole thing is a house of cards. There's been a lot of money sunk into this, but the payout isn't there and I think we'll see it go flat. If I'm not mistaken, there's been studies that have shown how online advertising is not getting the returns, but companies keep chasing it for various reasons. More recently there's a belief about the social media aspect and how its providing better returns, which is why we've seen them effectively turn the popular online "personalities" into marketing shills. But that's just going to undermine the whole thing and kill off why people were supposedly watching them in the first place.

But hey, lets laud these people for being Kim Kardashian, non-interesting assclowns that get pushed more because of their openness to pimping themselves out to whomever will provide them with money or products than for the actual content they provide.

It looks like this is the first move Google is doing with their recently acquired company.

They must be clearing the lower performing products to save their bottom line and use their resources elsewhere.

It's a bit shocking to me, I thought Justin.tv was big and worth keeping.
