R.I.P. J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) 1974 - 2006

Hip-hop just lost a giant this morning. I got the calls early afternoon--he went peacefully in his sleep. Saddest part is, even after this news spreads more publicly, the majority of the "industry" still won't even recognize it.

Dude was entirely too young... at least he isn't suffering anymore though. Dilla was a friend of several friends of mine, and while I never had the opportunity to build with this member of my extended fam personally, I definitely knew and admired his sound intimately. He will be missed. "Donuts", his latest LP, was released earlier this week.

If you ventured in here unaware of who J Dilla was, please show an ounce of respect and refrain from "hiphop sucks" threadcrapping, if only for this one thread.

How about including how he died?

Organ failure due to complications from a prolonged illness... that's about as specific as can be said with any certainty. A lot of effort was made to a spin on his actual condition. Rumors had been swirling since over a year ago of his failing health. It is known that he was in need of at least a kidney transplant.

This is really sad news. I just bought his album Donuts today and was listening to it on the way home from work, I jumped on the PC and then read that he passed. So sad. 🙁

incredible producer, definetly in my top 5. i heard he was sick awhile back, but still going to shows even though he was confined to a wheelchair most of the time and he appeared extremely skinny and ill. the hip hop world has lost a great today. now im going to go off and play 'amplified' amongst other songs/albums he's produced.

Those last few months could not have been comfortable for him. 🙁 But me and mine rest with the knowledge that he's in a much better place than any of us now.

My man DJ House Shoes is taking this particularly hard. They were like brothers, since way back. Hopefully, time will heal the pain for him though.

The liquor has definitely flowed freely tonight. 🙁
