Just found out my dog died today - I havent actually lived with her for the last 5+ years because of college and now living out of state, but I always had the closest relationship with her...
Gotta give her credit though - she lived to be over 16 years old which I guess would make her around 112 in dog years. My parents always promised when when I was a kid growing up that she would live until I was in college so it would be easier when I found out she passed...no one really thought she'd make it this far =).
But it really hit me harder than I thought it would to learn that she was put down today, I guess she had gotten really weak and was starting to have small seizures - This is how my mom described it

"The last few weeks, she had been getting pretty weak. If she tripped, she would nearly splat down. And her rear legs were giving out on her more and more. But she still was wagging that tail and insisting on her cookie for going out.

Last night when I got home from work, she was really weak and then was having what looked like some kind of seizures. She would stumble around in circles and her head was slightly moving to the side, over and over. Plus she was panting like she was in pain. So we just decided we could not watch her go downhill any longer. It's been really sad today, but we just had to do it. She didn't need to suffer any more. Actually, I didn't think she would live through the night, but somehow she did. "

One of those things I always took for granted when I would come home- that she would come running up from whereever she was to great me - it wil be sad the next time I'm home...
Anyways - just thought I'd share - she really was the sweetest dog.

Here's a couple pics taken from 3 or 4 years ago

She got a bit fat in her old age =)

This next picture I guess she was about 12 or so but she was getting to the point where she would have some troubles going up and down stairs - we were at a cabin w/ her and the owners had a lift chair because his wife was disabled - so the pic shows me reassuring her on the ride up the stairs...

sorry to hear that man.

putting down a pet that you've been around since it was a puppy is so hard.

in time it'll be fine though.

I lost a cat under similar circumstances. I was home for winter break while his health was deteriorating. He apparently had some kind of stroke and a seizure. He explored the house like it wasn't familiar, and the other cat picked up that he was acting a bit weird; she started hissing at and actively avoiding him. His seizures kept getting more frequent, sometimes more than one a day. We tried to keep him off of furniture because he'd plummet to the ground convulsing if a seizure hit while he was up off the floor.

I went back to college figuring that he wouldn't make it. We'd tried phenabarb, some old anti-seizure med. At the full vet-recommended dose, he acted like he was totally drunk, hardly able to walk. We halved the dose, and the seizures came back. He was already 14 at the time, and not in the best physical shape, and we didn't have the money for any expensive treatments. He wound up dying in his sleep one morning several days after the semester started. It might have been another stroke, or a seizure which stopped his heart or breathing.
His sister is still alive and quite well though; she'll be 15 in a few days.

It always sucks to lose them, but I'm sure that Abby had a good and damn comfortable life. Free health care, free room&board, and a number of doting servants. :) :cookie:

So sorry for your loss. Man I hate reading these kinds of posts :(

I am one of those kinds of people who are saddened more by an animal passing than when a human does. Think it is a sickness of some sort.
