Hey all. i've got the following rig

QX6800
Asus Striker Extreme 1303 bios
Corsair TWIN2X2048-9136C5D x2 4gb total
Enermax Galaxy 1000w
2x XFX 8800 Ultra Ex 675 core/ 1667 shader/ 1160 mem
Creative x-fi elite pro
WD 500gb sata 2 HD

cooling
Thermal Take Armour case Customized
5x 120mm fans
3x 80mm fans
Thermal right HR-07 ram coolers
Ram also has additional small zalman heatsinks stuck on them.
All 3 large parts of the asus heatpiping around the cpu for the chipset has fans on.
Zalman Resorator XT cooling video cards and cpu.

i have been madly trying to overclock this rig and the most i can get out of it without crashing is 3.66ghz which seems low.

i can't seem to get the fsb bus above 333 if i do the system just will not post.
If i drop the ram timings to 4-4-4-12 1t and increase the voltage to 2.4 it won't post.

the settings i use for voltages are.
vcore - 1.5125
1.2v ht - 1.25
nb core - 1.45
sb core - 1.60
cpu vtt - 1.55

fsb = 333
multiplier = 11

disabled
sli broadcast aperture
nvidia gpu ex
cpu internal thermal control
limit cpuid maxval
enhanced c1
execute disable bit
virtulization technology
enhanced intel speedstep

when setting the system clocks i choose unlinked and manually set the ram speed to 1142, timings are set to stock 5-5-5-15 2t.

i've seen rigs pushing the 4ghz barrier which is what i would like to aim at. i would also like to tighten up my memory timings.

i have worked with computers for years am an avid user of linux and do alot of programming and scripting.

only recently have i decided to seriously get into the overclocking scene so i am fairly new to it, but i do understand most of the concepts and theory.

i've read alot of guides but if anyone can recommend any comprehensive ones it would be most greatly appreciated.

guides i've read are
nvidias own 680i overclocing guide.
the guide on here written by graysky which i found excellent.
also a good guide on overclock.net as well which pertained mainly to the P5N32-E board.

Any advice on how to get a bit more juice outta my rig would be amazing.

thanks in advance

alex

The resorator is not enough to get your temps down.

3.66 is a solid OC on a G0 quad, dont believe what you read unless there are stability screenshots.

Also realize that aigos OC, the most common 4ghz you see around AT, is an Engineering Sample, not a retail chip.

QX6800 isn't G0. There are ES QX6800 G0, but that model was replaced by QX6850.

at 3.6 my load temps peak at 46 for cpu and around 57 for vid cards.

should i consider lapping to get the cpu down ?

i been using ozone fur to benchmark my graphics and can only score around the 3k mark.

i am trying to aim to gain something like these

Download Core Temp, Google Core Temp.

3.66 ghz on a B3 quad is very good. I would be happy with what you have. You are talking about getting another 140 mhz which in the grand scheme of things is nothing.

Try overclocking the video cards if you are trying to get more in a benchmark. That will net your more of a performance gain.

ok maybe that was a little harsh, but your cooling is not appropriate for 500W of heat load.

you cpu with that voltage and clock is spitting out at least 200w, and each of your video cards are 150w. I'm sure if aigomorla sees this thread, he will make a four hundred dollar water cooling shopping cart for you. I always leave that pleasure to him.

and also if your chip is B3, be happy. see it almost rhymes. I have a xeon G0 on water cooling at 3.6Ghz and I don't pretend more of it. I am running with far less voltage than you though, only 1.4v

hmm it seems my problem might be somewhere else.

i just ran the ozone fur test with 1 graphics card and got the same score as when running it in sli

Well 3.6ghz on a B3 would be some kind of record :p

B3 Q6600

Very difficult to do. And VERY difficult to keep. Also made my board toasty and it eventually died. 680i sucks crap. *sigh*

thats why i dont even bother to post mine on this forum. :T its very hard to reproduce. Its at my office, and all it does is crunch for team XS on WCG.

Nice aigo, that makes me wanna pop my B3 in my P5K Deluxe before i sell it and just see if my OC goes up by a noticable amount.

what sort of cooling system would you recommend ?

i was looking at getting a koolance but i am unsure whether to go for the

exos-2 LX

or

1050BK kit

aigo will help you with that. he knows more. but something along the lines of a dual loop:

apogee GTX + MCR220 for cpu
2x EK 8800 blocks + MCR320 for VGAs (I like the nickel plated EK blocks, but you could go for the swiftech stealth blocks as well)
2x MCP655 or comparable pump

that puts you around the $500 mark, if you really want you can get thermochill rads and wait for your wallet to strangle you in your sleep.

EDIT

oh by the way koolnothing, thermalcrap and zalwish ARE NOT watercooling solutions.

This is why i dont have much to comment on. You did everything for me. :p

That was on my 680i. The cooling requirement for that oc on the B3 was rediculous. I mean on my G0 its at a higher overclock and it doesnt break 50 on full load ATM.

On a WATER SETUP ONLY!!
B3's id say a nice oc would be 3.2 or higher using 400+ fsb on a 8x multi. On the G0's i think 3.6-3.8ghz is very doable well within safe ranges. I wouldnt even think about going north of 3.8ghz unless your on phase or you want to swap that chip out soon. The voltage requirements alone would kill your cpu, let alone the heat. Also i dont know how well your boards would take that kind of voltage stress.

Hi Orson

I have the same setup and I am also having trouble with the overclocking side of things

Can you please guide me on the voltage and fsb settings for this system

I would really appreciate a reply,

Thank you
