Here's the thing guys, i'm ordering a custom built system, I wanted to go with X6800 CPU and the guy just told me this:

one more suggestion: we can upgrade your CPU to quad 6700 that will overclock as much as the extreme 6800. We can disable the 2 cores and it will run much better as it has 8mb of cache.

What do you think about this? Any truth in it?

no i havent seen a QX6700 OC to 4.1GHz on air, i have seen X6800, E6600 , E6700 OCed to 4.1GHz however

most of the QX6700 i have seen have fsb wall at 330fsb... u need P5B DLX or badaxe 2 if u wanna good OC resut from QX6700

It's http://www.vadim.co.uk

They are expensive, but i have no choice. I'm from eastern europe and the only way to get a high end PC here is to order it from abroad.

Holy crap those things are expensive.

As for QX6700 vs x6800, if you can get them for very similar prices, definitely a QX6700 for encoding and heavy multitasking. I think the chances of hitting >3.5 Ghz are kinda low so assuming you will hit a wall @ about that speed, either will do you good.

the QX is a lot hotter than the X6800. Although it is a newer stepping, and it does yield better overclocks than the X6800, this is not the case for air cooling. on air you will have a hard time getting the QX above 3.4 GHz simply because you need to put lots of voltage into it, and as soon as you go above 1.45v, the temps become unacceptable for 24/7 use. at least imo, above 70C on a cpu is just too much.

I would still take a quad core At 3500mhz over dual core at 4100mhz if they are within $100 of each other.

If you are spending over $1000, you want it to be as long term as possible and Core 2 duo over 3.4ghz-3.5ghz is fast enough (going to 4.1 is only a 17% gain) and you start to have diminishing marginal gains in games. However, the benefit of 2 more cores can be often more than 50% in a lot of apps.

It's like right now would you get A64 4000+ or X2 3800+ (2.4ghz vs. 2.0ghz). I'd certainly pick x2 3800+ even if it's stock.

whats the point in getting a kentsfield and disabling two cores? The quad chip like russian said will reach 3500 without much difficulty. But beware of temps.
Get the kentsfield QX6700 withut disabling the cores. And overclock till ur hearts content.Just make sure u get good cooling.

3500 is going to be hard to get. I would say Kentsfield will overlock like an AMD. You will be happy to get 20% and if you have a really great chip and care less about tempeartures you might get 30%. Its not going to be the overclock fest that conroe is.

You were lied to, vernius. First of all, even if it's possible to disable half of the cores of a Q6700, what you'd then end up with is an E6700, that should have cost less than half as much money. And I'm almost positive that it isn't possible to "turn off" those two cores. It sure seems like http://www.vadim.co.uk/ is trying to sell you a $500 (US) E6700, but charge you 3 times as much money for it. It does to me, anyway.

Well if you can disable 2 cores you will only have 4mb cache as the qx6700 is a dual dual core not a quad core, so the cache is not coherent across all 4 cores, if the first die wants to access the second dies' cache it has to go over the fsb and the second die would need to be enabled for the cache to be on. Vadim will build a custom water cooled set up, but I don't know how far they can push the qx6700 but they overclock the x6800 to about 3.6 GHz, which with water cooling should be possible on the qx6700. Also buying the x6800 and qx6700 online you can find them for very similar prices (within about £10) so don?t let them gouge you on the price!

that's a lie. a QX6700 is two X6700 core glued together. the OC can be higher or lower since it depends on two CPU's. you should be able to OC it just as well with proper cooling.

There was a roumor going round that intel cherry picked the cores it is putting into the qx6700 and uses x6800 cores, but I don't know if thats true.
