Qwerty --> Dvorak

Hmm.. so my friend has been slower than me in QWERTY for a long time, and now he's trying to learn DVORAK to be faster than me.

Has anyone switched to DVORAK? Is it really that fast? I doubt he will beat me. And even if he does get on my level (me being @ Qwerty) then he's still slower because DVORAK gives him an advantage.

No?

Nah. It'll take him months just to get back to his current QWERTY speed if he can at all.

Always having to switch back to QWERTY on other people's machines, etc. makes it really slow going.

I switched a few years ago when I got a new keyboard, and it took me 2 months to re-learn typing. I was definitely faster in the end, but I attribute that more to the keyboard itself. Dvorak is definitely a much more logical layout.

Yeah. That is one reason I won't switch to DVORAK.. someone asks you to troubleshoot a problem, and you're slow on QWERTY.. rofl.

My friend thinks he can just switch the keyboard layouts on every computer he will use. Damn idiot.

I wouldn't switch to dvorak anytime soon because I can already type 140 wpm... Sufficient enough for me 🙂.

ORLY?

Did you try typera.tk?

Yeah... Although I like typingtest.com though 🙂...

How you manage to do that? There some special typing programs?

not worth the switching costs and the fact the skill is useless on any other computer you'll use. maybe he should get some clicky keyboard or ergonomic one for better typing position+ feedback for faster typing

I've been using a Dvorak keyboard for a while now.
I just use IBM Model M keyboards and then the software overlays built into Linux and Windows.
My typing on qwerty topped out around 80-90 WPM. On my Dvorak model M, at places like typingtest.com I usually manage to surpass 100 WPM.

I have fat fingers otherwise I imagine i'd be a bit quicker.

It takes a long time to get used to a new keyboard layout.
There is a speed improvement, but it isn't large enough for most people to justify switching.

For me, the biggest difference has been less stress in my finger and wrist joints.

EDIT: I have dvorak keyboards on 2 boxes at home and my PC at work, my laptop and server have qwerty keyboards at home, as I do intend to keep myself at least semi-capable at typing on a qwerty layout. (Though to be fair, my server keyboard pretty much never gets touched, as I usually ssh into it. Also, I sometimes plug a Model M dvorak keyboard into the ps2 port on my lappie, but I haven't over the last couple of weeks.)

Typingtest is easy, typera generates random sentences..

Well then here you go, first time around, and I'm #1 for this week

its lame how they start adding punctuation like crazy...

I use dvorak. I can type in both dvorak and qwerty no problem. I type about the same speed, but I'm not sure if it's because I just stopped trying to type fast.

The advantage qwerty has over Dvorak is that because commonly sequenced keys are placed far apart (like "the")... the fingers can "prepare" for the next key as the previous one is typing.

However, with Dvorak, you don't have to move your fingers very far (home row has lots of commonly used letters). Supposedly your fingers move 8 times farther typing on Qwerty than Dvorak. Dvorak is just FAR more comfortable. Typing on Qwerty after typing on Dvorak makes me feel like a brute.

BTW, it took me about 2 weeks to learn Dvorak to be able to type at "conversational" (instant messaging) speed. At least type fast enough to feel like my fingers were slowing me down. In those 2 weeks I was doing about 2 hours a day of drills (you can google for them). It took about another month or so to get to Qwerty speed.

It's definitely worth it if you have the time.

I want to, and bought another keyboard that i planned to reposition as a DVORAK keyboard but haven't had the time. I'm not interested if my typing doesnt get faster (Typera said 72 wpm :x), I just want less stress on the fingers.

I just switched over to DVORAK a few days ago. Obviously re-learing to type sucks, but a lot of common words are a lot easier to type.
