QWERTY cell phone for ATT w/ no data plan?

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a new cell phone, and would really love to have QWERTY. Unfortunately, it seems all these blackberries, blackjacks, etc require pricey data plans.

Put simply, all I want is a phone w/ text messaging and a full keypad. I'm on ATT/cingular, and can't change.

Any suggestions?

I currently have the 39.99/mo plan plus $4.99/mo for 200 text messages. I have no interest in increasing the cost of my monthly rate.

Any ideas?

Buy your own phone and put your sim card in there. Nokia e61/62 are about $100-200 on ebay with the e62 being on the cheaper side. Both have a form factor similar to a blackberry 8700 series. Both are quadband, but the e61 has wifi, so it ususally goes for a little more.

Just hit up mobileburn.com or gsmarena.com or one of the many cell phone sites and browse around for a phone with a keyboard you think you might like, then find a place to buy it. As long as it's "unlocked" you're good to go.

This is pretty much exactly what I want to do.

My big concern: Will I be able to send text messages on these phones if I don't have a data plan?

You can run a Blackberry without Data just fine. You can still SMS on a BB without a data plan, yes.

You can get all those phones without data plans, but you don't qualify for all the rebates...
