Qustions on donating hair

I had this great idea t o donate my hair the last time I was due for a haircut. Oh, I'm 31 now. In part because I had a female co-worker get cancer at age 30 and I realized these wigs are a real necessity.

Well, now that my hair is in the 4" ball park (and 3 months later), I thought I'd actually looking into length requirments, in part because the wife is pissed at my long hair.

Well, Locks of Love says the minimum length is 10". Is there anywhere I can donate it at a shorter length as I don't think the 12 months it will take me to hit 12" is going to happen. I'm kind of confused by the length requirment as I'm sure some boys want hair to.

Are there other organizations for hair I should consider?

Thanks!

Man, if they will take pubic hair I'm going to be the greatest philanthropist that ever lived.

I think they need the longer length because the hair has to be woven into the wig, plus it will need to be trimmed/cut and styled .it takes a fair amount iof hair to do that prep work I'd imagine.Btw,it was very cool of you to try to do this, did you ask the folks at locks of love why they require 10 inches?

Ahhh ... now that makes sense. Wondering if I could get away with 6" or so via other organizations.

Donating hair is a really good idea. I donated 12-13 inches of my hair last year. It made me feel good to donate it, my fiance donates blood all the time and he tires to get me to but I just can't stand needles. I plan on donating again.

Did you just have them take it off the bottom, then?

I let my hair get kind of long starting a couple years ago, and decided to let it keep growing so I could donate it. It doesn't seem to want to get long enough though, and if nobody wants hair shorter than 10" then I may just end up shaving it off and throwing it out. Seems a shame if it could go to good use, but I guess if it really can't be used at less than 10", there aren't really any options.

They need 10" to make a knot. The weaver folds a single hair in half to make a loop, pulls the loop around a thread in the weave of the wig foundation with a small metal hook, then pulls the two hair ends through the loop to make the knot.

Locks of Love has a good mission but they don't seem to actually live up to it, at least according to Wikipedia. It may not be true, but something to think about. If it is true, WTF are they doing with all the hair they're receiving? Starting a concentration camp?

Link (read criticisms and accountability standards)

Maybe one of the other charities would be worth looking in to, and maybe they'd accept shorter lengths.

Criticisms

Locks of Love has received criticism for its practice of selling donated hair, rather than using it in wigs as the donors expect. According to a 2003 report by the Better Business Bureau?s Wise Giving Alliance, in 2002 alone Locks of Love had raised over $150,000 by selling donated hair and had received another $213,000 in charitable contributions and grants, but provided only 113 human-hair and 39 synthetic wigs. [citation needed]

Locks of Love representatives are frequent guests on The Oprah Winfrey Show and other daytime television shows, where they provide haircuts to guests and audience members. Though the representatives and show hosts normally suggest that the hair collected during the show will go into a wig, that the wigs are given free of charge to children with cancer, neither of these outcomes are guaranteed.
