Quoting is ridiculous

Is there something that can be done about the quoting on the forums? When I see a string of 15 quotes, and then a one-line reply, and then after that a string of 16 quotes, and then another one line reply, and so on, it gets annoying. It is also a pain to read, and I know it must eat tons of bandwidth.

It would be better if when someone quoted a post, it only quoted the original content of the post, and none of the previously quoted text. They do this on DVDTalk.com forums and it works great.

If you don't care whether or not it's annoying, just think of all the badnwidth that can be saved.

Some people think it's cute of funny to make obscenely long quote posts. I find it annoying. :disgust:

I think it's funny every once in awhile. Like if someone asks "Why do people quote tons of posts?" and all the replies go on to quote tons of posts. I get a little kick out of that.

But when people just do it normally and constantly while having a conversation, I just flat-out can't read the thread.

Like this topic, I couldn't read it anymore because I got so fed up with the over-quoting.

I think the forums use G-Zip commpression or something like that so the text doesnt uses little bandwidth. It may be anoying but you just have to overlook it, theres alot of things on AT that bother me but I just overlook it.

Also with so many people repling at once it can be confusing if you dont quote the person, I sometimes try to delete the extra unneeded quoted material though.

Most like it, some don't, thats just the way it goes. As for bandwidth, that isnt an issue whatsoever since every page is gzipped before you get it.

Thanks

Does that mean the icon images are not a factor (size wise) either?

I love to quote! 😛

Methinks that the icon images can't be too much of a problem, because once they're loaded for the first time in each browsing session, they will be cached from then on. 🙂

It can be abused/overused.
😉

Icons are not compressed. As said many many many times, anandtech doesn't modify the forums so if you have an issue with the forum software this is really is not the place for it.
