Well a straightforward ineterpretation would be she is speaking of the first day of summer. You can know it, mark it on your calander, but unless you realize it the day it happens the you've "missed" it, one might say.

If you are always wanting for something, you will never notice what you already have.

You are off to a good start. Let me break this down for you and tell you exactly what Fitzgerald meant in that little quote.

She starts off rambling. Left to her own self, raw and with no sense of real reality and meaning, she escapes into the world of ideas and dreams. And so she dreams in real life. She is waiting for summer because she recollects a time when summer was different. When still a child, the carefree days are a nostalgic reminder of lost youth and maturity never gained. And so she says that summr again is coming and she is still here, with no idea of what it means to exist. A meaningless fact that brought joy in the past no longer carries the strident urgency.

But then she says that in this statem she still doesn't have enough time, an interesting paradox. She sayd that time is a burden and that she still longs for the longest day to squeeze the life out of it. So she needs something to do and watches the day. She watches so hard, giving temporary meaning to existence until that becomes the object of her desire: the actual watching. But the real missing still eludes her because she doesn't care about anything except finding something to do. So she hunts and waits and strives for the day when she has the most time to do something and when it comes, it passes, just like her life, with no real purpose or meaning.

You have to remember that this was the message that riches carry a heavy burden for most.

hope this helps

Cheers ! :)

This is why I always hated literature classes. Why can't "In two weeks it'll be the longest day in the year....Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it." mean "In two weeks it'll be the longest day in the year....Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it." I sort of hated psych classes for the same reason.
