Gleaned from a spam:
There was a man who was a fundamentalist who was against adultery and pornography; he outlawed abortion and sodomy; preached and lived his life by the highest measures of conduct; people of all kinds and ages and creeds swore allegiance to him and pledged to follow him; his people dearly loved him; and he was elected to the highest office in his land by a near unaminous vote. The man raised a campaign against people whom he called heretics and Communists; he wanted to do away with his version of immorality; he threw homosexuals and the homeless into asylum to protect them from further harm; and anyone who opposed the man was said to be in league with Satan. He advised, "Christ was the greatest early fighter in the battle against the world's enemies. The work that Christ started but could not finish, I will conclude." The great man finally found a group to lay the blame on, and his legacy shaped the world today although you won't find many signs that he ever existed except in old black and white history books. In fact, in his native homeland its now a serious crime against the law to even announce allegiance to his party or name. The man's name was... __________________.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. This man is not someone that we want to ever see roam the face of Earth again. There were men before him that promised the same promises, that carried the same sense of vigilante justice, the same con artists that offered the same false economies. The truth is that we all want to believe we are fighting the good fight when it comes to building America, and when it comes to saving the world. The truth is we are only free if we fight these very people that make these empty promises.
We can find better targets for our energy than gays and Arabs. We don't need to wear our patriotism out in public for fear of reprisals from everyone else; if you love your country then show it by fighting for your liberties and protecting the minorities that are targeted by hate. We don't need special hate crime punishments to elevate the minorities and activists that tread on our own toes in order to express their own right to protest. We don't need to send kids that download music to jail or rob their parents blind because they can't afford to have their day in court. We don't need to snoop on every phoneline just in case everyone is harbouring the next 9/11 suspect. We don't need to fight the drug users by threats of asylum for them. We don't need to punish the poor girls that have abortions, no matter what we feel is morally right or wrong. We don't need to pass more gun laws to keep firearms out of the hands of minors when the perputrators of the Columbine massacre already violated 141 federal laws anyhow. The feds can't handle the power they already had to prevent tragedies like 9/11, so how are they going to handle twice as many laws? Its all paranoia.
What we can do is make ourselves better and to lead by example. When people cross the line then that is the time to crack down on them. But be careful drawing too many lines lest you fall into your own trap. Life is too short to run around scared.
btw - the guy from the first paragraph was Adolf Hitler.
