Cardinals manager Tony La Russa who stepped down after his team won the World Series in 2011.

It has never happened before in baseball, according to historians of the sport. No manager before La Russa ever retired in the same calendar year his team won the Series.

My take:
it was stupid luck. all the planets aligned for him to win the world series. he knew that. he rode the wave and quit while he was ahead.

Related: John Elway retired during the off season after winning his 2nd super bowl.

IMO it would be damn hard to quit during such a time. You'll never know if you had another good run left in you. Better to quit at that point though than suck ass and be damn near forced to retire.

Cliff Lee blew a 4 run lead in the playoffs.. Cliff Lee NEVER blows a 4 run lead. Yeah, I'd say not only did the planets align for him, the planets in the next FIVE closest solar systems aligned as well.
