-started a job last monday.
-i hate it, and i took it with the intention of not staying there long term
-i have another job offer lined up and this job is one i actually want.
-i am quitting tomorrow.

do i bother giving a written letter of resignation?

i know i am burning this bridge regardless but i'd like to make it formal on their end for HR purposes, or is there no point?

Uh... tell your boss what's up. If he asks you to put it in writing, do it.

I did that once, basically didn't show up for work and then called and told them I was quitting. Boss told me she needed an e-mail for HR saying I was quitting so I sent one and that is that. I don't put it on my resume so I'm not too worried about it, but I quit for a different reason so you're better off just talking to your boss in person.

Can't a company technically fire you if they find out you left that off your resume?

I don't know, but I've attended 6 colleges for at least one class (had a few in the area during community college that I switched between depending on what they offered) and another job that lasted only a week because the hours were not what I was told (7am start, 2 hour work day) so my resume would be cluttered with useless info if I didn't leave it off.

And I don't think they can because do you put your teenage work at an ice cream shop on your resume when you're 50?

I don't think so (at least on a general resume). They can fire you if you fail to list it if they ask you for a "complete list of your past jobs".

The general resume should just highlight your strengths as they pertain to the company you are requesting an interview with. Complete list of past jobs requires them specifically asking.

Companies can't fire you for what you do not put on your resume. It will not stand up in court. They can fire you for lying on your resume though. Of course if you omit things in terms of criminal history, that's different, and unrelated to resumes.

After one week? Fuck it. Just call them from the new job..."Hey, BTW, I won't be in today....or ever. Mail my paycheck please."

I quit after working 1 day once. The job was a second job working in a call center that did surveys. I couldn't stand having a computer cold call the elderly people, asking them to answer surveys about their local TV stations without knowing how many questions were going to be asked. These surveys literally took 30+ minutes each. It was extremely evil.

Anytime you see Wilkin's Research on your CID don't answer. They are an EVIL corporation and don't deserve the breaks they get. Because they're a research survey company, they don't fall under the same scrutiny of other telemarketers because they're not selling anything. You can be on a Do Not Call list and still get hit by their random dialer...legally.

To answer your question, talk to the boss and tell them you're not happy. When you write out your resume on future job applications, just leave out your employment details with that place and it's like you never worked there. :p
