between the buried and me.

I'm a huge dream theater fan, as well as Tool, Meshuggah, Slayer, Yanni, Aphex Twin, etc..

I've been playing guitar for about 18 years, played bass in in jazz band and upright bass and cello in orchestra in high school. I've got pretty good chops... anyways

Its a speed metal, growling, blast of craziness... at first look

But its actually super intricate, incredibly thought through music that would be a nightmare to have to learn and reproduce. You'll find odd and downright crazy time signatures in these songs, which will keep you on your toes as to what split second the composure of the music may change.

I love it. BTBAM just released a cd called colors, which is probably the coolest cd I've ever heard, and one of the most jaw dropping in regards to the musicianship involved.

Laced in the crazy complicated blast beats are some of the most amazingly melodic and harmonious musical passages I've ever heard. la musica es mucho grande

if you can make it through White Walls, the last 5 minutes are almost perfect.

No, most technical death metal bands have better musicianship than BTBAM :)

Necrophagist for example

Growling sounds bad at first but after you listen to enough of it you start to like it :Q

nope. you give me an entire record full of growling, I won't get past the first song, no matter how great and talented the rest of the band may be. Growling, imho, is tasteless and destroys the harmony of the music.
that's why I love Dream Theater. On more than a few tracks, they play what could easily be death/speed metal, but DT actually fields a vocalist that delivers. :p
I enjoy a little screaming now and then from a few bands, I can handle Killswitch Engage from time to time, and enjoy Atreyu and Underoath, but any more screaming, or approach growling, and it just annoys me.

What a shame. You list such good bands in your post like Tool, Meshuggah, Dream Theater, and Aphex Twin.

Then you link us with that garbage. :(

Colors is a fucking amazing album. Anybody who thinks BTBAM lacks musicianship doesn't know the meaning of the word.

Unlistenable. I don't care if the other members of this band are today's Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms, the lead singer makes this painful to listen to.

I like Tool because of interesting lyrics, they try crazy stuff (third eye :D ), and most songs sound distinctively different. I'm sure there are a lot more technical bands, but it seems to me TooL brings it all together better. I wanna share this song - at 4min onward it just hypnotizes me :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...utube.com/HuntingtonSt

As for BTBAM, I skipped to "white walls" halfway. Sounds very good, (reminds me of dream theater), but I wish there was no growl :D I mean here and there it's ok but when it starts with 3 mins of pure growl makes it feel not very musical at all :p Not to mention it's almost impossible to tell what the lyrics are when they growl :p

That's the general consensus :p Why growling doesn't sound musical? Not as much variation in tone as normal singing. Also play the "white walls" song after halfway, it is listenable. Other songs, not so much.

Vocals absolutely SUCK. Like everyone else says, it makes the music unlistenable.

the law goes not cover "best" topics. Only ones which state "funny" or "laugh" or something similar.

I think a new law should be created.

Oh man, I feel old for saying this, but I could not understand a word he was saying!LMAO

5 years from now when they are all working at dunkin donuts, they will think back to their heyday and then blame the damn vocalist!!

I love Metal, but if the lyrics are too strained, it becomes tiring to listen.

Slipknot FTW.

Okay, show me the wiki...

You're thinking of Oldsmoboat's special theory.

I'm thinking of the general theory.

I'm thinking of the general theory.

What's the theory that covers almost-epic threads that come within inches of hitting the tipping point of immortal fame/notoriety... and suddenly disintegrate, fading into Bolivian right at the altar of critical mass?

We should have one for that too.

most speed metal would sound a lot better if they just didnt even have a lead 'singer' at all.
