Worse than crack in my experience. Smoking coke was 10x easier to quit for me than stopping smoking cigarettes. I haven't had an urge to do coke in any form for over 15 years but I still think about having a cigarette nearly every day.

Good for you, SuperSix! I just celebrated 3 years cig-free (after 23.5 years smoking) on Thanksgiving, and know it was the best thing that ever happened to me! :)
Definitely, make certain you're doing it for yourself. I took up smoking at 18, and then watched my grandfather die from emphysema complications......and didn't quit. Then watched my dad fight lung cancer for 3+ years and finally succumb to it, and still didn't quit. It wasn't until I was ready to do it for ME that I was capable of doing it, though I do give thanks to the good Lord above for His help!
I won't wish you good luck.......I'll wish you good health!! :D

smokings a bitch, i smoked for 10 years and this is my 2nd year since i quit. getting drunk is the hardest time to quit, but i never took those weird pills to help either. i just straight up gave them away and stuck to it. drinking had to be the hardest part of not smoking though, after a few beers i still think about a smoke. good luck, btw i hear some of those pills give ya some really crazy dreams.

I am using Chantix. A new drug that a: Makes cigs taste like crap, b: Blocks the nicotine receptors in the brain.

Seems to be working fine. I cheated the first day, was out drinking and playing pool, took a few puffs, it was gross. The hardest part is just the routines. Seems to be getting easier each day.

I love not wondering if I have enough cigarettes, if I have a lighter, do I have to stop and get more, etc. I seem tp be coughing up less phlegm too.

http://www.chantix.com/

Anyone else use this drug here?

Mark

That drug must occur naturally in my system because no matter how many times I try cigarettes taste like crap. Unless I'm too drunk to notice it, but then I wake up with disgusting cigarette after taste that lasts for a day or two.

I remember reading at the time about the hazards of "Wellbutrin", which is the product that Zyban is based on...glad I stopped using it...

That was my EXACT same experience with Zyban, although it did greatly reduce my urge to smoke the side
effects were horrible with me as well. Also caused bad insomnia so I stopped taking it after 6 weeks..and
went back to smoking..

Not sure what makes them "weird", I know I cannot quit cold turkey - in my personal amd professional life, there's little room for me to be moody and bitchy.

I am having vivid dreams, but they aren't scary or too weird.

Be nice if they were more sexual. :p

i am a firm believer in cold turkey or nothing as the addiction is primarily mental and not physical.

I disagree. I would put it 80% physical, and 20% mental. Nicotiune is a helluva drug.

if nicotine is such a physical addiction then why do humans show no signs of this? if a heroin user quits they have serious physical withdrawals including the bends, shakes, sweats, etc. i am tired of hearing people talk about how physically addictive cigs are, its a load of horse shit as far as i am concerned.

You've never heard of a nic fit? Never met someone who gets cranky when they don't get their fix?

And you are quite ignorant as well. Since you are not addicted to nicotine - you cannot understand. But you could have used Google. Yes, the withdrawal symptoms are not wuite as dramatic as heroin, cocaine, etc, but they are still valid.

I anxiously await your response that I have hand-picked the responses and links.

From Wikipedia
"According to the American Heart Association, "Nicotine addiction has historically been one of the hardest addictions to break." The pharmacological and behavioral characteristics that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine."

Your posts are some of the few that make me wonder about people and their inability to research, and/or understand other people/issues.

I don't hold up much hope for you unless you change your life style at least temporarily.
For me quitting smoking was the hardest thing I ever had to do. After 20 + years of smoking, I used the nicorette gum for a week and went cold turkey. In the first few months, I avoided alcohol and activities that involved smoking like drinking coffee. I stayed away from smokers. It's been 10 years. I lit up a cigarette for somebody last week and I felt like smoking one up right there and then.

So good luck but if this doesn?t work this time, don?t give up and keep trying.

Yes, I have made some changes, and will continue to make more. I hope to eventually not drink, I have cut WAY down in the last 4 days. (I usuallly drink at least every other day, and have not had any in 4 days). One of the hardest mental times is right now, sitting at my computer, drinking coffee, but I am OK so far.

Thanks for the nice comments. :)

My friend quit smoking cigs by smoking a big cigar. He told me that all the tobacco that was in those, he didn't even think about cigs for ~2-3 days.
He doesn't inhale, either.

Bah - Cigars have always made me sick. Can't stand the smell when I was smoking, I assume it will be worse that longer I don't smoke cigs.

I don't even smoke and this thread is still a good read. Luckily, I never took up smoking. Sounds like a helluva drug to kick, especially hearing that people quit like 10 years ago but still get urges to light up.

Not sure. I did a fair amount of research, but never saw the suicidal thoughts connection.

I have had no such thoughts, none of the side effects, and no nicotine withdrawal symptoms yet.

My sense of smell has gotten better, now smoke, and people that recently smoked stink to me. I may take my car and get the carpets shampooed, as well as my place.

I still want to smoke, because of the routine, but it tastes horrible, and there's no effect from the nicotine - makes it feel like a really useless venture (Like it isn't already?)

I figured that I have NOT smoked nearly 80 cigs in the past 3 days. (avg 1.5pk/day, give or take), and about 10.00.

To me, Chantix has been a perfect drug. YMMV.

You sound like commercials, but at least you're quiting and helping someone else quite :) Best luck.

Well sorta...I quit after 15 years or so and you do sometimes get urges, but for me it is like an urge for a MacDonald's cheeseburger...as you are driving by you get a slight craving but not enough to make you pull in....of course that is after having quit for 4 years...I will say the first few weeks are a b*tch though...good luck.

Good luck man - I've failed many times myself. I'm eager to hear how Chantix pans out for you - my gf and I might be VERY interested...

I just started presenting the idea of this stuff to my girl. She doesn't like the idea so far but I hope she tries it eventually. Glad to hear it is working well for you so far.
