what would you do if one of your roommates is always sucking up the bandwidth?
one of my roommates insists on using bittorrent. as some of you might know, bittorrent requires you to upload as you download. and since we're using adsl, whenever he starts uploading, i start getting horrible lag with whatever app/game i happen to be using.

so... on the router i decide to forward all the bittorrent ports to my machine. i can hear him going crazy over in his room, probably trying to figure out why his stuff isnt working.

stupid roommate. he's a CS major and he still cant figure out whats going on.

Just tell the admins on campus that he is downloading pirated material. Once he is ratted out he will probably stop using Bit Torrent. I know what you mean about BT though, that app uses bandwidth like no app I have ever seen.

We got 4 people sharing the dsl. he should probably realize BT sucks up bandwidth like crazy and affects the rest of us. for the same reason you dont fill up the fridge with only your food, because you realize other people might need to use the fridge at any time too.

If he is willing to be reasonable, you might consider speaking with him to let him know how bittorrent affects the connection for everyone, and ask him to only use it when no one else is using the connection. BIttorrent DOES allow for resumption of stopped downloads.

Iono... He's stupid enough not to figure out why his sh1t don't work, and yet you're figuring he'd know that he'd suck up all the bandwidth?

Jeez, grow some balls and tell him to shut off his downloads. When I had roommates, you'd just hear "I'M USING INTERNET" being yelled back and forth and people would stop their downloads, and start them again when the other people were done. Some more phrases commonly heard where:

roomy 1:"TURN OFF YOU'RE FVCKEN DOWNLOADS"
roomy 2:"FVCK YOU!"
*roomy 2 turns off his torrents

*an hour later
roomy 1:"I'M DONE B!TCH!"
roomy 2:"ABOUT TIME MOTHERFVCKER!"
*roomy 2 turns on his torrents

It worked out perfectly.

get him the bittorrent experimental build, you can lower you upload rate to a minimum of 3 kB/s, and DL's speeds should still be over 80 kB/s.

Well, it's pretty obvious he doesn't know how much it affects everyone else, or else he might not have been doing it. What's a better way of telling him that it bothers you, going up to him and telling him directly or doing sh!t behind his back?

If you're running XP and he is using NT or higher...

Open notepad and put this in there:

shutdown -s -f -t 1 -m \\his computername OR IP address

Save as all file types and name it something familiar like mybitch.bat

Make sure it's a batch file. Save to desktop or create shortcut to taskbar.

This will shut down the perp's machine instantly, think of it as blaster with 1 second delay. No harm done (other than unsaved documents being lost) but what the hell?

Oh, to the OP... tell him that if he is gonna use 100% of the upstream bandwidth (and a good chunk of the downstream from the sounds of it) that he is going to pay 100% of the bill. Then go get a second line installed and be uber!

No even better. By using this combined with my 1337 h4x0r sk1llz I have "compiled" this program which you simply insert into the startup on the enemy's computer. Watch him sit there with the "wtf" look on his face until he formats, then do it again. MUHUWAHAHAHA
