Quieting PSU Fan

So, the fan in my PSU makes this horrible annoying clicking noise that basically makes it pontless to lower the sound of my other fans. I would just attempt to run the cord for the psu out of the psu onto a controller or something, but its two pin, while my case is setup for 3 pin. Any suggestions? Replace the fan? Retail it? etc.


It is an Antec TP II 430, single 120mm fan.

Open it up and replace it. Easiest option.

Yea, but how do you get the connectors to match?

i don't bother. i just use butt? connectors, the crimp things, metal tube covered with plastic u stick wires into and mash down for a connection. i just cut wires and reconnect that way. connector be damned. don't touch the capacitors! u'll be in for the shock of ur life. so if u dunno wtf ur doing, maybe just buy a new psu. oh yea once i just cut the wires, removed the fan, and wired the fan for power through the grill into the case and used a molex like any old case fan, that works too, and is well easier and probably slightly safer since u don't have to dig around as much or deal with short wires.

Yeah, most home centers and Radio Schlock have crimp on butt connectors (be sure to get the correct size - the gauge of the wire is printed on the insulation but you may need a magnifier to read it or you could even use small wire nuts. But best is always to cut and splice with solder and heat-shrink tubing. A friend of mine uses short pieces of very small diameter copper tubing for butt splices. nice and soft so it crimps easily even w/o a crimp tool and soaks up solder like a champ. Cover the splice with heat-shrink and your in bidness...

I will even run the fan leads right out the front of the PSU and run it off my fan controller. Works well as long as you are careful to be sure it never gets turned off - and no cutting/splicing. I almost let the "magic smoke" out of one of my PSUs because of a poor fan extension connection. Luckily I have a good sense of smell... My current "outside the box" PSU fan mod is running that way right now.

I agree butt connectors are th easiest way to replace the fan.
Keep in mind, if you are under warranty you are better off getting an RMA from antec.
Opening you PSU will void your warranty.

Oh, I didn't notice it was and Antec - yet another corner cut... And the specs of the fan you get for replacement should match the original fan re. CFM and current/power rating so the thermal fan control in the PSU will regulate the new fan approximately the same as the old one.
