I have an old P3-733 which I use as an IPCop server (mainly because I want a powerful router which won't slow down under heavy BitTorrent traffic, and not so much for the firewall) but the problem is that it's way too loud. So I decided to quiet it down.
The components which emit noise in the system are 1) the cpu fan 2) the PS fan and 3) the hard drive. So I started with the CPU fan, it was simple, I hooked up a fanmate 2 and I was done.
Then I replaced the PS fan a few days ago with an old yate loon that I had hanging around but it was still too loud (I think something happened to it, cause it used to be real quiet) so today I decided to put in a different fan and hook up a fan mate. While installing it I decided to turn the fan around and have it blow over the PS components intead of just sucking air out (if this is not a good idea for some reason, then let me know, btw, I doubt if the system uses more than 75 watts so the PS (300w) probably doesn't even need active cooling...).
The first 2 parts were a success but now the HD (an old 15GB WD) is driving me crazy (even at idle) so I need an idea to shut it up... It's screwed into a 3.5"-5.25" bay converter and sitting on a shelf (see pics). If anybody knows if it's possible to install IPCop on a flash drive and get rid of the HD completely, please tell me how!!!
