Quieting a PowerEdge rackserver?

I have a Dell Poweredge 1850 1u rackserver. The fans in it can get relatively loud with this thing, so I was wondering: anyone have any recommendations on how to quiet it short of putting it into another room? I have a smaller house, and it's not really practical to put it anywhere but in the basement (that has no power).

I'm thinking perhaps building an external "rack case" for it such that it has larger fans, but am not really sure how much such a setup would quiet the damn thing down.

I hope it's not too stupid of a question, just seeing if anyone had any experiences or thoughts..

Are the fans setup in a hot-swap setup? My fans were installed in my case the same way, and I just ended up removing all 8 fans (2x4-fan bays) and replacing them, as well as putting them all on fan controllers. It helped immensely. What kind of fans, etc. does it have?

That sounds a bit too adventurous (and also possibly warranty voiding) for me.. thanks though!

Why don't you put power in the basement? I ran a seperate 20 amp circuit just for my server gear. Depending on your house, it could be the most inexpensive solution and it won't void your waranty.

There is no freaking way to quiet down 1u rack servers - Period.

Do what the last user suggested and put it in a seperate room so you don't hear the noise. And might I suggest you put it in a temperature controlled environment, those things run hot, reason for those tiny loud fans.

Yeah I understand the reasons for why they're so loud. Honestly I wasn't looking into replacing the fans at all. Was wondering if an external box was a feasible solution, and to see if anyone had experience.

Overall running the box downstairs would be ok as I have a DRAC card for remote access.. thanks all.
