Quietest HS/Fan for ole 1.33 Tbird?

I realized now that the fan i put on my parents computer is extremely loud (30db) and whiny...whats the best heatsink and fan i could get to reduce this beasts volume?

My fan is noisey too, though mine is like 28db, and was one of the quieter ones on the market at the time too, so much change sin 4 years in terms of fan quality.

Sadly I have no recommendatiosn though but I was able to clock my 1.33 on stock voltage to 1.44ghz

Not to mention inexpensive, with the right features- triple tab clip and pre-applied thermal paste. They're also marketed as the Masscool falconrock, and may have a different low noise fan, depending on the vendor. They're all good, though.

Temporarily remove the fan before installing the sink- it's a lot easier.

Between the Falcon Rock and Whisper Rocks (there have been a few variations), the Whisper Rock scored down with the stock AMD Retail HSF. Its fan really doesn't move a lot of air, if your case itself isn't well ventilated. The Falcon Rock is at least "fair", and the cost shipped is usually a bargain if you can't find it at a local brick & mortar store. The T-Bird 1.33 and 1.4 are/were miniature "space heaters" not unlike the more power-hungry of Intel's P4 cpu's. (I swapped my T-Bird for a Palomino XP 2100, but the Gigabyte ZXE mb thinks it's an XP 1500, even after a BIOS Flash.)

Adding this later: for a $15 HSF, Gigabyte's "Neon 7" is attractive, moves a lot of air with a 90 mm fan, and is very quiet.

Spire and Masscool, formerly Speeze, are different marketing arms of the same company. The actual heatsink, the metal part, of both the Masscool falconrock and the Spire Whisperock are *identical*. The fans are also identical in these two examples-

Even if slightly different from the item at SVC. Having used these for some time, I firmly believe that any overall performance differences are insignificant from one to another... mostly arising from variations in technique among the reviewers.

IME, they'll outperform any of the stock socket A AMD coolers at a much lower noise level. I've used them on Thunderbird 1400's with entirely acceptable results, even in cases where system airflow isn't the best... They also react extremely well to more airflow from stronger fans in mild overclocking scenarios- still a lot quieter than the typical hairdryer sound of the stock hsf's...

How about a Thermaltake Big Typhoon? Might be overkill but it is only 16db. If you buy at Fry's Electronics or their website www.outpost.com there is a $15 rebate good till 12/30/05.

The Typhoon's MSRP is $50, add shipping, and the $15 rebate is not much (and I have not seen any Socket A versions of this one). The "Prettiest" $15.00 HSF these days is still Gigabyte's "Neon", when you can find the Socket A version; it's quiet, it's blue, it's lighted up. (I have edited my prior message to include links to both an image and the Gigabyte description page.)

Several of the overstock/surplus Inet retailers were selling a nice, quiet Cooler Master XDream II HSF recently for about $10-12, shipped.

I have had both of the Spires " -xxx- Rock" HSF's side by side to compare cfm, noise, etc. One had an aluminum fan (the WR-IV) that was practically silent, but really moved little air. That was probably the model reviewed by Frosty Tech. I recognized that the bases were exactly the same. I got both from eBay for $4.95 plus about $5.00 shipping. The one with the regular plastic fan (Falcon Rock) moved more air and I used it as received. The other one I swapped fans on before using it.

Both of those I bought had a copper center slug in them, and both had clips that covered all three socket lugs, but the WR-IV had the same fan as in Jhhnn's third link:
